HP LaserJet Products - Cannot Print to a Shared Network Printer in Microsoft Windows

Issue

Print jobs are stuck in the print queue (spooler) on a computer running Microsoft Windows connected to the print server. The following symptoms might also accompany the issue:
  • The print job in the printer's queue shows a status of Printing, but nothing prints.
  • Print jobs in the queue cannot be deleted, not even on the server.
  • Print jobs do not disappear or print until the Print Spooler service is restarted.

Solution

This is a Microsoft issue and not an HP issue. Sharing a printer over a network is a feature of Microsoft Windows and is not HP printer specific.
For Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, a fix is available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, The Print Spooler service may stop sending print jobs to a printer that uses the standard port monitor on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.

Workaround

To complete the print job without resolving the software issue, follow these steps to disable bidirectional printing support for each HP printer driver installed.
  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes. The Printers and Faxes window opens.
  2. Right-click the printer icon for the printer that you want to modify, and then click Properties. The Properties dialog box opens.
  3. Click the Ports tab, click to clear the Enable bidirectional support check box, and then click OK.
