HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Using the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner

This document pertains to HP and Compaq desktop computers with the ATI TV Wonder™ Digital Cable tuner.
This document contains information about using the tuner.

Your Digital Cable Tuner is able to display over-the-air NTSC and ATSC channels and Analog and Digital cable channels. When you use a CableCARD, the tuner also is able to receive Premium cable channels. The Digital Cable Tuner does not support OnDemand or Digital or Premium Satellite channels. For these channels, you need to use a cable set-top box or satellite set-top box.

To insert a CableCARD, remove the power cable from the back of the tuner, slide the front cover up, insert the CableCARD, lower the front cover, and then connect the power cable again.
Choosing a home or work network
For your Digital Cable Tuner to be recognized by your computer, it is necessary that you set your network to Home or Work, rather than Public. When you first turn on your computer, a message appears giving you the option to set up a home, work, or public network. If you chose Home or Work, you do not need to do the following procedure.
To change your network location to Home or Work:
  1. Log on to your network.
  2. Click Start .
  3. Click Control Panel, click Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click Customize, and then click Private (for home or work networks). If you are prompted for an administrators password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  5. Click Next, and then click Close.
Watching and Recording TV Programs
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a technology used by content providers such as online stores and cable companies to control how media files are used and distributed. The ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner supports DRM.
Some media files such as commercial movies are copy-protected, and, therefore, have DRM applied to them. This prevents illegal duplication and distribution. Media Usage Rights are permissions to use a protected file in a particular way such as watching a movie only once, permitting you to watch a recorded show from your computer only, or the right to burn a music file to a CD.
The copy protection rules differ if you are using the Digital Cable Tuner with a CableCARD or without it. Below are some of these rules.
Copy protection using the tuner with a CableCARD
  • All recorded TV programs are copy-protected, which means you can only play back the programs on the computer where you recorded them.
  • All recorded TV programs can be recorded to a DVD, but the programs can only be played back on the computer where they were recorded.
  • If you perform a System Recovery, you will not be able to play your previously recorded TV programs.
  • TV programs can be streamed only to an Xbox 360.
Copy protection using the tuner without a CableCARD
  • All recorded programs can be played back from other computers that have Windows Media Center and all the system requirements.
  • All recorded TV programs can be recorded to a DVD and played back from other computers that have Windows Media Center and all the system requirements.
  • If you perform a System Recovery, you will be able to play your previously recorded TV programs that are stored on a Personal Media Drive, Media Vault, storage device, or another computer.
  • TV programs can be streamed to any computer that has Windows Media Center and all the system requirements.
  note:
To find the system requirement to play back recorded TV programs, refer to the Getting Started guide that came with your computer.
Tuner not found
If you are setting up the TV tuner in Windows Media Center and get the message “TV Tuner Not Found”, a Firewall is likely blocking access. You need to add the Digital Cable Tuner's IP address to the list of exceptions in your firewall software. For example, the following steps explain how to find the IP address of the digital tuner and add it as an exception in Norton Internet Security:
  1. Remove the cable card if it is inserted.
  2. Click Start , Control Panel, Network and Internet, and then click Network Sharing Center.
  3. Click Manage network connections from the left side of the Window.
  4. Double-click the Local Area Connection that is associated with the ATI TV Wonder device and then click the Details button.

  7. Click Trust Control from the left side of the window, and then click the Trusted tab.

  8. Click the Add button, type the IP address into the field provided, Click OK, and then click OK again.
Now that the IP address for the digital tuner has been entered into the Firewall, the tuner can be set up in Media Center. Install the cable card after the tuner has been set up.
