HP Scanjet Products - Multiple USB Scanners May Not Be Able to Work Simultaneously in Windows XP

Issue:
Multiple USB scanners may not be able to work simultaneously in Windows XP. This issue is likely to happen if any of the following HP products combination is connected to the USB ports of your computer:
  • HP Scanjet Scanners
  • HP Photo Scanners
The first scanner installed and connected is detected correctly by your computer but the following symptoms appear when connecting a second one:
  1. Your computer Device Manager will list the second scanner as an Unknown Device together with a question mark.
  2. If the Unknown Device entry is clicked twice, the Imaging Devices Properties window appears and the Device Status, will display the following error message: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory (Code 38)
Solution
Please connect and use one scanner at a time.
  note:
If two scanners are connected at the same time, please disconnect one of them from the computer USB port, and restart the system.
Cause
This incidence occurs because the Usbscan.sys driver provided by Microsoft Windows XP can not be used simultaneously by more than one scanner.
