HP PCs - Using Cortana Personal Digital Assistant (Windows 10)

This document applies to HP and Compaq computers with Windows 10.
Cortana personal digital assistant helps you manage your personal information, settings, and a variety of tasks. To use Cortana, your computer must be connected an active Internet connection.
  note:
Cortana is not available in all countries/regions and languages. Visit Microsoft's website to see Cortana's regions and languages (in English).
Use this document to learn how to:
  • Set up Cortana

Set up Cortana for the first time
Before you can use the Cortana digital assistant, Microsoft needs permission to collect your personal information.
  note:
Speech recognition is not available in all languages and does not work with all computers. For recommendations about what to do if this feature does not work with your computer, see What if the Cortana setup fails? in this document.
  1. Make sure your computer is connected to an active Internet connection.
  2. To open Cortana, click the Type here to search box, also called the Cortana search box.

  3. On the Cortana help window, review the types of tasks Cortana can help perform, then click Cortana can do much more....

  4. On the permissions window, click Sure to give Microsoft permission to collect and use your personal data.

    A Great, thanks! window displays.
  5. On the Great, thanks! window, click Sign in.

    • If you have a Microsoft account, type your sign in information, click Sign in, then follow the on-screen prompts to finish signing into your account.
    • If you do not have a Microsoft account, click Create one!, enter your personal email address or create a new Outlook email address, then fill out the requested information. Click Next, then follow the on-screen prompts to finish setting up your account.

Enable the Hey Cortana feature
You can teach Cortana to recognize your voice and activate Cortana by saying, "Hey Cortana." This hands-free feature allows you to use voice commands to tell Cortana what you want. For example, you can say, "Hey Cortana, wake me up at 6 AM."

  1. Make sure Cortana is set up. For more information, see Setting up Cortana for the first time in this document.
  2. Make sure your computer is connected to an active Internet connection.
  3. Click the Cortana search box, then click the Settings icon .
  4. Locate the Hey Cortana section, then click the on/off toggle to turn on the feature.

  5. In order to use speech recognition, click Sure to give Microsoft permission to send voice input to help improve speech services.
  6. In the Hey Cortana section, click Learn how I say "Hey Cortana".

  7. In the message window asking you to repeat six phrases, click Start.

    Cortana displays the six phrases one-by-one. Repeat each phrase as it displays. When the phrases are complete, Cortana sends a You're all set! message.
Use the Hey Cortana feature to find Windows programs, files, and apps
Cortana can help you quickly find Windows help. For example, you can ask Windows "How do I change text size?", "Where is the Control Panel?", or "What is my IP address?" You can also find Windows files and apps by saying or typing the file or app name.
Use Cortana's Notebook
Use Cortana's Notebook to keep Cortana informed about your personal interests. Some of these interests are turned on by default. You can add interests, turn interests off, or remove them. Cortana offers several interest categories that you can customize to your needs, such as:
  • Eat and Drink: Get recommendations for places to eat and drink
  • Local Events: Get suggestions for local events
  • Finance: Track stock market gains and losses
  • Getting around: Get traffic, time, and route suggestions
  • Movies and TV: See show times and trailers for movies and TV shows that interest you
  • Music: Get recommendations for popular tracks and albums
  • News: Get the latest headlines and stories on topics that interest you
  • Sports: Get information about your favorites sports teams
  • Travel: Get up-to-date flight status and other travel details
  • Weather: Get conditions, forecasts, and alerts for any city you choose
Add Favorite places
Use Cortana's Favorite places feature to store locations of your favorite places. Cortana also provides directions to get to your destination quickly. Open the Cortana Notebook to modify or add a favorite place.
  1. Click the Cortana search box.

  2. Click the Notebook icon .

  3. In the Notebook window, click About Me.

  4. Click Edit favorites.

  5. Click the Add icon .

  6. Type the name of your favorite place in the Add a favorite box. For example, if you want to add your favorite restaurant, type the restaurant name, then select the restaurant from the search results.

  7. If you want to give your favorite place a nickname, type the name in the Nickname box, then click the Save icon .
    The address, a link to a map, and telephone number are added to your favorites.

  8. To view your favorite places, click the Notebook icon , click About Me, then click Edit favorites.
    A list of your favorite places displays with addresses, directions, and telephone numbers, if necessary.

  9. To edit or delete a favorite place, right-click the place, then select Edit or Delete from the drop-down menu.
Add Reminders
Open the Cortana Notebook to modify or add reminders.
  1. Click the Cortana search box.

  3. In the Notebook window, click Reminders.

  4. On the Reminders screen, click the Add icon .

  5. Complete the information in the boxes, depending on the reminder. For example, if you want to add a reminder for soccer practice every Thursday at 4:00 p.m., use the following steps:
    1. Type Soccer practice in the Remember to ... box.
    2. Click the Time box, then select Another time....

    3. Click the pre-selected time, scroll and select 4:00 PM, then click the Checkmark icon .

    4. If the reminder date is for a future date, click Today, select the date for your reminder, then click the Checkmark icon.

    5. Click Only once to open the frequency drop-down menu.

    6. Select Every Thursday.

    7. If you want to add a photo to your reminder, click Add a photo, upload a photo from the computer or take a photo using the computer webcam.

    8. In the Remind you about this? window, make sure the settings are correct, then click Remind.

    9. To view your reminders, click the Notebook icon , then select Reminders.

Change the name Cortana uses for you
Open the Cortana Notebook to modify the name Cortana uses for you.
  1. Click the Cortana search box.

  3. In the Notebook window, click About Me.

  4. Click Change my name.

  5. Type your name in the box, then click Enter.
  6. To hear how Cortana pronounces your name, click Hear how I'll say it.
    Cortana says your name.
  7. If Cortana says your name correctly, click Sounds Good.

  8. Click Done.
Change Cortana's settings
Use Cortana's settings to change your name, teach Cortana your voice, change your privacy settings, and other settings.
  1. Click the Cortana search box.

Use Cortana in Microsoft Edge
When you perform a search in the Microsoft Edge address bar, Microsoft Edge uses personalized information that you have provided to Cortana to make your search results more relevant to you. For example, if you type local weather in the address bar, the search results show weather information for your location. To change your location, click Change next to the location displayed on screen.

In addition, if you find a topic that you would like to know more about, highlight the word or phrase in the webpage, right-click it, then select what you want Cortana to do:

  • To open a window with more information and related links, click Ask Cortana about "...", where "..." represents the highlighted word or phrase.

  • To have Cortana read the page, click Read aloud.
    Cortana reads the page.
    You can exit, pause, rewind, fast forward, or change the voice of Cortana with the Read aloud toolbar.

  • To select the entire webpage, click Select all.
  • To copy the highlighted word or phrase, click Copy.
