HP Z820 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the PCI Retainer

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the PCI retainer for the HP Z820 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the PCI retainer that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the PCI retainer, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select PCI retainer from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
PCI retainer removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Pull back on the release latch and rotate the PCI retainer up.
  3. Lower the back end of PCI retainer to disengage the hooks from the slots on the chassis.
  4. Remove the PCI retainer.
PCI retainer replacement
  1. Insert the hooks on the back end of PCI retainer into the slots on the chassis.
  2. Rotate the PCI retainer down and push until it locks in place.
