HP LaserJet and Color LaserJet Multifunction Printers - Light color originals are lighter or missing on copies or scans

Issue:

When making copies or scans of a light original document, the output is lighter than original. Light color or pastel tones in an original may disappear completely or become lighter or slightly different in color when copied or scanned.
The information in this document applies to the following products:
  • HP Color LaserJet CM3530mfp
  • HP Color LaserJet CM4540mfp
  • HP Color LaserJet CM4730mfp
  • HP Color LaserJet CM6030/CM6040mfp
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 color MFP M575
  • HP LaserJet M3027/M3035mfp
  • HP LaserJet M4345mfp
  • HP LaserJet M5025/M5035mfp
  • HP LaserJet M9040/M9050mfp
Solution

Adjust the background cleanup settings from the control panel on the device.
  caution:
These adjustments could make bleed-through more susceptible for Copy/Scan output.
  1. From the control panel, select Copy, Fax, Scan to Email or Scan to Network, and then select Image Adjustment.
  2. Select Background Cleanup then move the slider to the left or to the right to increase or decrease the background, and then select OK. Repeat as necessary to achieve the desired output.
      note:
In bleed-through occurs with the default setting, move the Background Cleanup slider to the right to address the issue.
  3. When finished, select the Home icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Cause

When duplex printing (printing on both sides), the printed area on the back of the printed page often “bleeds through” and can be seen from the front side of the page causing the copied, printed, or scanned image to appear as light colors on front page. Darker originals are more susceptible to bleed-through than originals containing light colors (pastels). To prevent the backside from being copied to the front side of the page, the background must be lightened in the settings.
