HP Officejet 4500 (G510) Series and 4500 (K710) Series All-in-One Printers - Alignment Page Does Not Print

Issue
After you install new cartridges, the product does not print an alignment page as expected.
Try the following solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the solutions resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
Solution one: Make sure that the front access door is closed
Check the front access door. If the door is open, close it.

  • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two" in this document to complete the alignment process.
  • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Check for carriage obstructions
Follow these steps to make sure that nothing obstructs the carriage.
  1. Open the front access door. The carriage moves to the far right side of the product.

  2. Inspect the area around the carriage for any obstructions, including packing material. Remove any obstructions.
  3. Close the front access door.
    • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two" in this document to complete the alignment process.
    • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Remove, and then reinstall the cartridges
Follow these steps to remove, and then reinstall the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the front access door. The carriage might try to move into the access area. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

  3. Push down on the top of the cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you to remove it from its slot.

      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  4. Repeat these steps for the other cartridge.
  5. Check for obstructions under and around the carriage. Remove any obstructions.
Step two: Reinstall the cartridges
  1. Slide the cartridge forward into the empty slot, and then gently push on the upper part of the cartridge until it clicks into place.

    • If you are installing the tri-color cartridge, slide it into the left slot.
    • If you are installing a black or photo cartridge, slide it into the right slot.
  2. Repeat these steps for the other cartridge.
  3. Close the front access door.
    • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two" in this document to complete the alignment process.
    • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Reset the All-in-One
  1. Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
    • If the alignment page prints automatically, continue to "Solution five, Step two" in this document to complete the alignment process.
    • If the alignment page does not print, continue to the next solution.
Solution five: Realign the cartridges
Follow these steps to print an alignment page and realign the cartridges.
Step one: Print an alignment page
  1. Load plain white paper in the product.
  2. Open HP Solution Center:
    • Windows XP: Click Start, click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    HP Solution Center opens in a new window.
  3. In HP Solution Center, click Settings ().
  4. In the Print Settings section, click Printer Toolbox. The printer Toolbox opens in a new window.
  5. Click the Device Services tab.
  6. Click Align the Print Cartridges ().
  7. Click Print Page. The product prints an alignment page.
Step two: Scan the alignment sheet
  1. Open the scanner lid, and then place the printed alignment page face down on the scanner glass.

  2. Close the scanner lid.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Wait while the product scans the alignment page and completes the alignment process.
  5. When the cartridge alignment is complete, recycle or discard the alignment page.
