HP Z400 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Side access panel sensor (optional)

The side access panel sensor (also called the hood sensor or Smart Cover Sensor) is a switch that detects when the side access panel is opened. The side access panel sensor is mounted either on a metal bracket attached to the front chassis or on the front fan holder/card guide.
This section describes how to remove and install the sensor.
Removing the side access panel sensor
To remove the side access panel sensor (bracket mounting):
  1. Power down the workstation (see Predisassembly proceduresPredisassembly procedures).
  2. Disconnect power from the workstation (see Predisassembly proceduresPredisassembly procedures).
  3. Remove the side access panel (see Removing the side access panelRemoving the side access panel).
  4. Disconnect the sensor cable from the HSENSE receptacle on the system board, as shown below (1).
    Figure :
  5. Remove the sensor by sliding the sensor in the slot in the bracket toward the front of the chassis and then pushing the sensor down (2).
  6. If removing the metal mounting bracket for the sensor:
    1. Remove the front bezel (see Removing the front bezelRemoving the front bezel).
    2. Remove the two screws that hold the metal bracket to the front of the chassis (3).
To remove the side access panel sensor (front fan holder mounting):
  1. Power down the workstation (see Predisassembly proceduresPredisassembly procedures).
  2. Disconnect power from the workstation (see Predisassembly proceduresPredisassembly procedures).
  3. Remove the side access panel (see Removing the side access panelRemoving the side access panel).
  4. Disconnect the sensor cable from the HSENSE receptacle on the system board, as shown below (1).
      note:
To locate system board components, see the service label on the side access panel
  5. Remove the sensor by sliding the sensor in its slot in the fan holder/card guide toward the front of the chassis (2).
    Figure :
To remove the fan holder/card guide, see Removing the front fan assemblyRemoving the front fan assembly.
Installing the side access panel sensor
The metal mounting bracket for the sensor is part of the sensor kit and must be installed before installing a sensor for the first time. Installing a front fan or some full-length expansion cards may require that you install a front fan holder/card guide instead of the mounting bracket.
To install a bracket-mounted side access panel sensor, reverse the removal steps (see Removing the side access panel sensor).
To install a side access panel sensor when a front fan holder/card guide is present:
  note:
The metal bracket where the sensor resides is part of the sensor kit and must be installed before installing a sensor for the first time. Installing a front fan or some full-length expansion cards may require that you install a front fan holder/card guide instead of the mounting bracket. See Installing the front fan assemblyInstalling the front fan assembly for details on installing the side access panel sensor with the fan assembly.
  1. Power down the workstation (see Predisassembly proceduresPredisassembly procedures).
  2. Disconnect power from the workstation (see Predisassembly proceduresPredisassembly procedures).
  3. Remove the side access panel (see Removing the side access panelRemoving the side access panel).
  4. Install the sensor by sliding the sensor into the slot provided for it in the fan holder/card guide (1), as shown in the following illustration.
    Figure :
  5. Carefully route the sensor cable along the bottom of the drive bay so that it is not pinched by the fan holder/card guide and plug the sensor cable into the HSENSE connector on the system board (2).
      caution:
Clamping a cable between the card guide and the chassis might damage the cable.
      note:
To locate system board components, see the service label on the side access panel.
  6. Make sure that the cable will not interfere with the expansion cards.
