PSC 2210 - Set up the fax on a DSL line with a phone sharing the same phone line

This document applies to the PSC 2210, PSC 2210v, and PSC 2210x.
If you have a digital subscriber line (DSL) service through your phone company, use the following instructions to connect a DSL filter between the telephone wall jack and your PSC 2210. This filter removes the digital signal that would block your PSC from communicating properly with the telephone line.
Important! If you have a DSL line and you do not connect the DSL filter between your wall jack and your PSC 2210, you will not be able to send and receive faxes.
  1. Obtain a DSL filter from your DSL provider.
  2. Locate the phone cord supplied in the box with your PSC 2210.
Important! If you do not use the cord supplied with the PSC 2210, you might not be able to fax successfully. This special 2-wire cord is different from the more common 4-wire phone cords you mght use for your phones. Check the end of the cord and compare it to the ends in the following illustration:
Where can I get the phone cord if I no longer have it?
Towards the top right corner of the screen, click the link for how to buy.
  3. Plug one end of the cord into the open port on the DSL filter.
Figure : The open port of the DSL filter is on the front of the filter in the following illustration.
  4. Plug the other end of the cord into the port labeled "1" on the back of your PSC 2210.
Figure : There are two ports on the back of the PSC 2210. The port on the left is "1."
  5. Plug the short cord attached to the end of the DSL filter into the wall jack.
If you receive both voice calls and fax calls on the same phone number, and you have no other office equipment on this phone line, connect your PSC 2210 using the remaining instructions:
  6. Remove the white plug from the port labeled "2" on the back of your PSC 2210.
Figure : Port "2" is the port on the right. The plug is in port "2."
  7. Plug the cord from your phone into the "2" port on the back of your PSC 2210.
Choose if you want to answer fax calls automatically or manually
The PSC 2210 cannot distinguish between fax and voice calls. It is factory-set to answer all calls automatically after five rings. You do not need to change any settings if you want to receive faxes automatically. If you are expecting a voice call, you will have to answer it before the fifth ring because the PSC 2210 will answer the call otherwise.
To receive faxes manually, you must be available to respond in person to incoming fax calls or your PSC 2210 will not be able to receive faxes. Before you can answer fax calls manually, you must change the Rings to Answer setting to No Answer.
To change the Rings to Answer setting to No Answer:
  1. Press Setup.
  2. Press 3.
  3. Press 3 again. This selects Basic Fax Setup and then selects Rings to Answer.
  4. Press 2 to select No Answer.
  5. Press Enter.
If you pick up the phone before the fifth ring and hear fax tones from a remote fax machine, you will need to answer the fax call manually.
To answer a fax call manually using a phone plugged into the "2" port on the back of your PSC 2210:
  1. Pick up the handset of the phone when the PSC 2210 rings.
  2. If you hear fax tones, press Fax and then press either Start Black or Start Color.
  3. Wait for the fax tones and then hang up the phone.
To answer a fax call manually if your telephone is plugged into the same telephone line, but not connected through the "2" port on the back of the PSC 2210:
  1. Press 1 2 3 on your phone.
  2. Wait for the fax tones and then hang up the phone.
