HP Deskjet 5550 Series Printer - Print Quality Issues

Issue:
Print quality changes unexpectedly. The black quality of print suddenly turns lighter or color print is in grayscale. Printed materials suddenly lose the print quality seen previously.
Colors are printed as grayscale if the Black print cartridge is out.
  • If using only the Tri-color print cartridge - Colors print and black is grayed (not true black)
  • If using the Photo print cartridge - Colors are printed as grayscale
Solution
Check to see that the printer is not in Reserve Mode. Reserve Mode lets you continue printing with one cartridge when the other print cartridge has run out of ink.
Install new cartridges to remove the printer from Reserve Mode.
  note:
When printing in reserve mode in OS 10, there is no error message, or any attention window that pops up. However when printing in OS 9, there is a window that pops up, informing the user the printer is in reserve mode, the type of pen installed, and the type of pen that needs to be installed to be taken out of reserve mode.
