HP Smart Tank Printers - Blinking lights and error codes

Descriptions of buttons, error codes, and lights patterns for 670, 720, 750, 790, 6000, 7000, 7300, and 7600 printers.

Control panel buttons, icons, and lights (HP Smart Tank 670, 720, 750, 6000, 7000, and 7300 printers)

Example of the control panel buttons, icons, and lights

Callout	Description
1	Power button: Turns the printer on or off.
2	ID Copy button (select printers): Place a card or small-size document anywhere on the scanner glass to copy both sides onto the same page.
3	Color Copy button: Starts a color copy job. Press and hold or press multiple times to increase the number of copies. Copying starts two seconds after the last button press.
4	Black Copy button: Starts a black-and-white copy job. Press and hold or press multiple times to increase the number of copies. Copying starts two seconds after the last button press.
5	Control panel display: Displays error codes, number of copies, wireless status, and ink and printhead icons.
6	Wi-Fi button and light: Turns wireless capability on or off.
7	Information button and light: Prints an information page that contains the summary of printer settings and status.
8	Resume button and light: Resumes a job after a disruption (for example, after loading paper or clearing a jam), or indicates the printer is in a warning or error state.
9	Cancel button and light: Cancels a print job.

Example of the control panel display icons

Callout	Description
1	Open Lid light: Turns on when the scanner lid is open.
2	Attention light: Indicates an error.
3	Number Counter: Displays `E` and a number when the printer is in an error state or displays the number of copies during a copy job.
4	Document icon: Indicates paper-related issues. Photo icon: Indicates photo copy mode.
5	ID Copy Front icon (select printers): Indicates the side of the card to place on the scanner glass. ID Copy Back icon (select printer): Indicates the side of the card to place on the scanner glass.
6	Printhead icons: Indicates a printhead error for the color or black printhead.
7	KYMC and Ink icons: Indicated when specific ink tanks are low or empty and need to be refilled. The letters above the ink icons indicate which tank is empty.
8	Wi-Fi Direct icon (wireless models only): Indicates Wi-Fi Direct is on.
9	Ethernet icon (Ethernet models only): Indicates that the printer is connected through a wired connection.
10	Wireless Status icon (wireless models only): Indicates the status of a wireless connection.

Callout	Description
1	Back button: Returns to the previous screen.
2	Control panel display: Displays menu options.
3	Help button: Opens the Help menu for the current operation.
4	Cancel button: Cancels the current operation.

E (Error) codes

The number counter icon in the control panel for HP Smart Tank 670, 720, 750, 6000, 7000, or 7300 series printers displays E and a 1-digit error code.

E and 1 or 2 display

The paper in the input tray does not match the paper settings.

Press the Cancel button .
Load the correct paper or change the paper size in the software.
Resend the print job.

E and 3 display

The printhead carriage has stalled.

Lift the ink access door.
Make sure the printhead cover is properly closed and the print carriage is not obstructed.

CAUTION:
Do not open the printhead cover.
Remove any jammed paper or other objects blocking the carriage.
Close the ink access door.
Press the Resume button to continue the print job.

E and 4 display

There is a paper jam.

Clear the jam.
Reload the input tray, and then press the Resume button to continue the print job.

E and 5 display

The scanner is not working.

Restart the printer.
Try to scan again.

E and 6 display

The printer is in an error state. Reset the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

Note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

E and 7 display and one or more ink icons blink

Ink tank or tanks are out of ink.

Notice which ink icon or icons blink: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, or blacK.
Refill the indicated ink tank.

E and 8 display

Fatal error.

Turn the printer off, and then turn it on again.
Try to print.

If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

E and 9 display

Firmware update error.

Turn the printer off, and then turn it on again.
Try to print.

If the problem persists, contact HP Customer Support.

Control panel lights

Control panel lights blink along with the icons on the display to indicate most common error conditions.

Power button light

Various states of the Power button light.

On: The printer is on.
Off: The printer is off.
Dimmed: The printer enters Sleep mode after five minutes of inactivity. The printer turns off automatically if it continues to be inactive for two hours and is not connected to any other device through USB connection, and wireless, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth are turned off.
Blinks: The printer is processing a job.
Blinks quickly: Ink access door might be open, close the door. If the ink access door is closed, the printer is in an error state, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the error.

Wi-Fi light and icons

The Wi-Fi light and the wireless status icon on the control panel display work together to indicate the status of a wireless connection.

The Wi-Fi light and wireless status icon are off: The printer is not connected to a wireless network.
The Wi-Fi light and wireless status icon are on: The printer is connected to a wireless network.
The Wi-Fi light blinks and wireless status signal cycles: The printer is trying to connect to a wireless network.
The Wi-Fi light blinks and wireless status signal cycles: The printer is unable to connect to a wireless network.

Attention light and Document icon blink

There is a paper jam in the document feeder or the original document is not loaded properly into the document feeder.

If the Cancel light is on, press the Cancel button.
Clear jam from the document feeder or load the original properly.
Try to print.

An A or 'racecourse animation' displays

The printer is aligning the printheads.

Wait for the Alignment page to print.
Place the Alignment page, print-side down, on the scanner glass.
Press the blinking Copy button to scan the page.
Wait for the scan to complete.

Printhead alignment completes.

Resume and Cancel lights on, Attention light and Document icon blink

There is no paper in the input tray.

Resume and Cancel lights are on and Attention light and Document icon are blinking

Load paper into the input tray.
Press the Resume button to continue.

Attention and Resume lights on, one or more Ink icons blink

Indicated ink tanks are very low on ink.

Attention and Resume lights are on and one or more Ink icons blinking

Identify the ink tank to refill.
Refill the ink tank.

Attention light, E7, and one or more Ink icons blink

Indicated ink tanks are out of ink.

Identify the ink tank to refill.
Refill the ink tank.

Resume light and one or more ink icons are on

Indicated ink tanks are low on ink.

Identify the ink tank to refill.
Refill the ink tank.

Status light patterns

Status light bar patterns for HP Smart Tank 790 and 7600 printers.

Status light	Color	Description
	Amber	Indicates an error.
	Blue	Indicates wireless network connection status.
	Green	Indicates that the printer is busy, an update is in progress, or the printer is turning on or off.
	Purple	Indicates that the printer is in Wi-Fi setup mode.
	White	Indicates that the printer is idle, sleeping, or processing a job.

Solid white

The printer is idle and not connected to a wireless network.

Connect the printer to a wireless network.

White pulses from center to the edges

The printer is processing and printing or copying a job.

You do not need to take any action. Wait for a few minutes to complete the job.

White at the center

The printer is processing a scan or fax job.

You do not need to take any action.

Solid amber

The printer is in an error or warning state that has blocked printing or any other job.

Check the printer display or HP Smart app for troubleshooting information.

Amber blinks quickly

The printer has encountered a serious error.

Check the printer display or HP Smart app for troubleshooting information.

Solid blue

The printer is idle and connected to a wireless network.

Solid light blue color appearing on the bar

You do not need to take any action.

Light blue at center

The printer is in Sleep mode and connected to a wireless network.

Light blue appearing at the center of the bar

You do not need to take any action.

Pulses blue

The printer is trying to connect to a wireless network.

Blue light pulsing at the center and growing outwards

You do not need to take any action.

Pulses blue and then amber

The printer is unable to connect to a wireless network.

Solid blue followed by amber pulsing on the bar

Try to connect to a wireless network.

Green at center

The printer is undergoing a firmware update.

Green light appearing at the center of the bar

You do not need to take any action. Wait for the update to complete.

CAUTION:

Do not turn off the printer or disconnect the power.

Green at center then fades

The printer is initializing, waiting for confirmation, performing automatic cleaning routines, downloading and installing a printer update, or cooling down.

Note:

The print job might pause during cooling down, and continues when the printer is ready. This might take several minutes.
