HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Print using Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC)

Learn how to print wirelessly to a supported HP Enterprise printer using Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication (NFC) with an the HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC & Wireless Accessory.

When using an HP Enterprise printer with embedded Wireless Direct Print (built-in print access point) or HP Near Field Communication (NFC) capability, or after installing the HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC/Wireless Direct Accessory on an HP Enterprise printer, use the steps in this document to obtain a mobile printing app or solution appropriate for the mobile device and operating system, and to learn how to print wirelessly from a laptop, phone, or tablet.

Step one: Set up the printer

Before you can print using Wireless Direct or Near-Field Communication (NFC), you must first enable the Wireless Direct and NFC settings on the printer.

  1. Make sure that your printer is compatible with HP Jetdirect print servers and NFC/wireless accessories.

    If you are unsure, refer to the following document:

  2. Make sure that the printer is powered on.

  3. Enable Wireless Direct on the printer.

  4. Enable Near Field Communication (NFC) on the printer (optional).

  5. Obtain the Wireless Direct Name (SSID) and password on the printer control panel using the following steps:

    Note:

    The steps vary according to the type of control panel.

    FutureSmart 3 control panels

    FutureSmart 3 control panels

    FutureSmart 4 control panels

    FutureSmart 4 control panels

    • FutureSmart 3: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select the Wireless icon Wireless icon, and then select Print. A page prints with the Wireless Direct Name (SSID) and password.

    • FutureSmart 4: From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select the Information icon Information icon, and then select Wireless Direct to view the Wireless Direct Name (SSID) and password. Select Print to print a page with this information.

    Note:

    The Wireless Direct Name, or Service Set Identifier (SSID), is the printer name that will display in the list of available Wi-Fi connections on the laptop, phone, or tablet. If the Wireless Direct password is not visible on the printed page, contact your network administrator.

Step two: Set up the laptop, phone, or tablet

Before you can print from a mobile device to an HP printer, you need to set up the laptop, phone, or tablet and download a compatible Print app or driver.

If you have an Android 4.4 or newer, perform step 1 below and then continue to Step three: Connect to the printer and print.

For all other operating systems, follow all of the steps below.

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi on the phone or tablet.

  2. Turn on Near Field Communication (NFC) on the phone or tablet (optional).

    Note:

    This option is typically found in the Settings > Wireless menu, but will vary depending on the device type and operating system version. You might also need to turn on Bluetooth.

  3. For Android devices, make sure a built-in print plug-in is installed.

    1. Open Settings, and then open General settings.

    2. Open the Application manager.

      If the HP Print Service Plugin or the Mopria Print Service is listed, the plug-in is installed. If not, continue to the next step.

    3. Go to the Google Play Store and install one of the following plug-ins:

  4. For NFC printing with Android or Windows devices, install the HP ePrint app or driver.

    Note:

    HP ePrint is the only compatible solution available for NFC printing with Android and Windows operating systems. NFC printing is not currently supported on Blackberry, Chrome OS, or iOS devices, or on Windows phones.

  5. For Wireless Direct printing, make sure that you are using a compatible mobile print app or solution for your operating system.

Step three: Connect to the printer and print

To print, choose which method to use (Wireless Direct or Near Field Communication) from the options below and then follow the steps provided.

Method one: Print using Wireless Direct

The steps to print using Wireless Direct vary depending on the device and operating system that you are using. Find the section below that pertains to your device, and then follow the instructions to print using Wireless Direct.

Android 4.4 and newer

Follow these steps to print from an Android (4.4 and newer) device using Wireless Direct.

  1. Make sure the phone or tablet is within wireless range of the printer.

  2. Open the file that you want to print.

  3. Tap the menu icon Menu icon.

  4. Tap Print.

  5. Tap the name of the printer in the list.

  6. Tap the down arrow to change any print settings, and then tap the Print icon Print icon.

Blackberry, iOS, and Windows 8 or newer

Follow these steps to print from a Blackberry, iOS, or Windows (version 8 or newer) device using Wireless Direct.

Note:

Depending on the file type and application that you are printing from, these steps might vary slightly.

  1. Make sure the phone or tablet is within wireless range of the printer.

  2. Open the Wi-Fi menu.

  3. Connect to the printer.

    1. Open the Wi-Fi list of available connections.

    2. Select the "DIRECT-xx-HP..." printer in the wireless network list.

    3. Select Connect, and then type the Wireless Direct password (listed on the page that you printed in Step one).

      Note:

      This will disconnect the phone/tablet from current Wi-Fi connections.

  4. Open the HP ePrint app.

    Note:

    On an iOS device, you can also select AirPrint.

  5. Open the file that you want to print from the HP ePrint app.

  6. Tap Print.

    Note:

    If the Windows application does not have a Print option, swipe to the right from the edge of the screen, and then select Devices.

    For Windows laptops and tablets, follow these additional steps:

    1. Select the HP ePrint printer.

    2. Select the Connected tab, and then wait while the HP ePrint Software driver automatically discovers the printer.

      Note:

      For NFC printing, select the HP NFC tab, and then touch Print.

  7. Select the WIRELESS DIRECT printer.

    Note:

    If there are multiple Wireless Direct printers listed, use the SSID printed previously to identify the correct printer.

  8. Modify the print options or settings.

  9. Select Print.

    Note:

    If you receive a Your printer requires attention message, tap the message and follow the instructions to print.

  10. When finished printing, reconnect to your preferred Wi-Fi network.

Note:

After you select the printer, HP ePrint saves the printer to your recently used printers list. In Windows, this is located on the Recent tab.

macOS (version 10.7 and newer)

Follow these steps to print from a macOS device (10.7 and newer) using Wireless Direct.

  1. Open the file that you want to print.

  2. Select the File menu.

  3. Select Print, and then select AirPrint (if it is not already the default).

  4. Modify the print options or settings.

  5. Select Print.

  6. When finished printing, reconnect to your preferred Wi-Fi network.

Method two: Print using Near Field Communication (NFC)

To print using NFC, use the HP ePrint Software driver (version 4.5 or newer) with either an Android phone or tablet (v2.2 or greater), or a Windows 8 ElitePad 900 tablet.

Note:

NFC printing is not currently supported on Blackberry, Chrome OS, or iOS devices, or on Windows OS phones.

  1. Make sure the phone or tablet is within wireless range of the printer.

    Note:

    Connecting to the printer via NFC will disconnect the phone/tablet from current Wi-Fi connections.

  2. Open the HP ePrint app.

  3. Open the file that you want to print from the HP ePrint app.

  4. Follow the steps below for your operating system:

    • Android: Closely align (within one inch or 2.5 cm) or touch the NFC icon on the phone or tablet with the HP Jetdirect and hold the positioning for at least one full second to make sure a connection is established. The mobile device might make a connection sound or display a pop-up symbol.

      The printer will begin printing the file.

      Note:

      After a connection is established, you can move the mobile device away from the HP Jetdirect. If you are prompted to enter a password when trying to print using NFC, obtain the password from your administrator.

      When finished printing, you might need to reconnect to your preferred Wi-Fi network.

    • Windows:

      1. Select Print.

        Note:

        If the Windows application does not have a Print option, swipe to the right from the edge of the screen, and then select Devices.

      2. Select the HP ePrint option and then select Print.

      3. Select the HP NFC tab.

        Note:

        This tile is only visible on laptops and tablets with NFC capability that have the NFC feature turned on.

      4. Closely align (within one inch or 2.5 mm) or touch the NFC icon of the phone or tablet with the HP Jetdirect, and hold the positioning for at least one full second to make sure a connection is established. The mobile device might make a connection sound or display a pop-up symbol.

        Note:

        After a connection is established, you can move the mobile device away from the HP Jetdirect, but remain in the vicinity of the printer while the print job is sent.

      5. Select the printer.

        Note:

        If you are prompted to enter a password when trying to print using NFC, obtain the password from your administrator.

      6. Modify the print options or settings.

      7. Select Print.

        Note:

        When finished printing, you might need to reconnect to your preferred Wi-Fi network.

        In Windows, HP ePrint Software saves the printer to your recently used printers list located on the Recent tab. To automatically print future jobs when the mobile device is touched to the HP printer, select Automatically print upon successful connection. When selected, print options or settings are not available.

Note:

If you purchased and installed an NFC & Wireless Direct Accessory on a printer that already has NFC capability built-in, you might experience connection conflicts. If so, remove the installed accessory and use the embedded NFC feature.
