HP OfficeJet Pro 7730 Printers - 'Cartridge Problem' Displays

This document is for HP OfficeJet Pro 7730 Wide Format All-in-One printers.
The printer does not print, and a Cartridge Problem error message displays on the printer control panel.
These errors might occur with the correct HP ink cartridges under certain circumstances. The ink cartridge might need to be reinstalled, the electrical contacts could be dirty, or there could be an ink cartridge or printer failure.
  caution:
You must install the Setup ink cartridges that came with your printer during the initial printer setup, or an ink cartridge error occurs.
Step 1: Make sure the ink cartridges are compatible
An ink cartridge error displays if the wrong ink cartridge is installed.
Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.
  1. If necessary, select your country/region.

If installing genuine HP ink cartridges resolved the issue, and the printer does not display an ink cartridge error, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  3. Wait until the printer is idle and silent.

  7. Reinsert the ink cartridge into its slot, making sure the letter on the ink cartridge matches the letter on the slot, and then push the ink cartridge forward until it clicks into place.
      caution:
Do not lift the latch handle on the carriage to insert ink cartridges. Doing so could cause the printhead or ink cartridges to be incorrectly seated, which could damage the print mechanism and cause printing problems.

  8. Repeat these steps for other ink cartridges, if necessary.
  9. Make sure no ink cartridge is sticking out farther than the other ink cartridges.
If an ink cartridge is sticking out, push it until it snaps into place.
  10. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  11. Check the control panel for any error messages.
If these steps resolved the issue, and the printer does not display an ink cartridge error, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 3: Check the carriage latch
Make sure the carriage latch is down.
  1. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent.
  3. Make sure the carriage latch is down. If the carriage latch is up, press it down until it snaps into place.

  4. Close the ink cartridge access door.
If these steps resolved the issue, and the printer does not display an ink cartridge error, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 4: Clean the ink cartridge contacts
Clean the ink cartridge contacts to remove debris that might be preventing an electrical connection.
  caution:
Clean the ink cartridges one at a time. Do not leave an ink cartridge outside of the printer for more than 10 minutes. Also, never turn off the printer when an ink cartridge is removed from its slot. Leaving ink cartridge slots empty might cause damage to the ink system.
  1. Find a clean, lint-free cloth (eyeglass wipes or coffee filters work well) that you can use to clean the ink cartridge contacts.
  2. Make sure the printer is on.
  3. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  4. Wait until the printer is idle and silent.
  5. Push in on the front of the problem ink cartridge to release it, and then pull the ink cartridge toward you to remove it from its slot.

  8. Push the ink cartridge forward until it clicks into place.
  9. Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridges, if necessary.
  10. Close the ink cartridge access door.
  11. Check the control panel for any error messages.
  12. If the error message persists, repeat the previous steps to clean the ink cartridge contacts.
If these steps resolved the issue, and the printer does not display an ink cartridge error, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 5: Reset the printer
Resetting the printer can reset the connection with the ink cartridge and clear any error messages.
  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
      note:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
If resetting the printer resolved the issue, and the printer does not display an ink cartridge error, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
Step 6: Replace the problem ink cartridge
The error message might indicate a specific ink cartridge caused the error. Replace the problem ink cartridge.
If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.
The carriage moves to the center of the printer.
  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  4. Push in on the front of the ink cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you to remove it from its slot.

  5. Remove the new ink cartridge from its package.
  6. Hold the new ink cartridge so that the ink cartridge contacts face the printer.
  7. Slide the new ink cartridge into its slot, and then gently push it forward until it snaps into place. Make sure the letter on the ink cartridge matches the letter on the slot.
      caution:
Do not lift the latch handle on the carriage to insert ink cartridges. Doing so could cause the printhead or ink cartridges to be incorrectly seated, which could damage the print mechanism and cause printing problems.
Figure : Inserting the ink cartridge into its slot
Image: Insert the ink cartridge into its color-coded slot
  8. Repeat these steps to install any other new ink cartridges.
  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.
If the error message still displays on the printer control panel, continue to the next step.
