Remove and Replace the System Memory on the HP OMEN 880 Gaming PC

This document applies to HP OMEN 880 Gaming PCs.

Before you begin
  • Have available a Phillips-head screwdriver.
  • Turn off the computer. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable. Disconnect the power cord.
  • Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
  • HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.
  • Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.
  warning:
Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting. Before starting, power off the computer and wait for components to cool before starting these procedures.
  caution:
This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing the system memory
To remove the system memory, use the following instructions:

Remove the left side cover.

Find the top retaining clip of the memory socket.

Press down on the top retaining clip of the memory socket.

Step 4
Angle the top part of the memory module out of its socket and pull the bottom part of the module firmly out of the socket.
  note:
The motherboards for this unit have a special memory socket design that requires only one retaining clip to be pushed to remove the module from the socket. The clip on the bottom side of the socket is not maneuverable.

Replacing the system memory
Use the following instructions to replace the system memory:
Step 1
Find the notch on the bottom of the memory module that is offset from the center and fits over the...

...and now, find the notch cut into the side of each memory module...
...that fits over a small tab on the inside edge of the bottom memory retention clip.

Step 2
To replace a memory module in this unit, press the bottom side notch of the memory module over the tab on the bottom clip.

Press the top part of the memory module firmly into the socket until the top retaining clip snaps into place at the top side of the module.
