Clean the pickup rollers and separation pad in the document feeder

Try these few simple steps first:

Use the flatbed scanner rather than the document feeder.
Use high-quality originals.
When using the document feeder, load the original document into the feeder correctly, using the paper guides, to avoid unclear or skewed images.

If the problem still exists, try these additional solutions. If they do not fix the problem, see “Improve print quality” for further solutions.

Check the scanner glass for dirt and smudges

Your printer model might be different from the printer shown in the video, but the steps are the same.

Over time, specks of debris might collect on the scanner glass and white plastic backing, which can affect performance. Use the following procedure to clean the scanner if the printed pages have streaks, unwanted lines, black dots, poor print quality, or unclear text.

Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet.

Clean the scanner glass (callout 1) and the document feeder strips (callout 2, callout 3) with a soft cloth or sponge that has been moistened with nonabrasive glass cleaner.

caution:
Do not use abrasives, acetone, benzene, ammonia, ethyl alcohol, or carbon tetrachloride on any part of the printer; these can damage the printer. Do not place liquids directly on the glass or platen. They might seep and damage the printer.

note:
If you are having trouble with streaks on copies when you are using the document feeder, be sure to clean the small strips of glass on the left side of the scanner (callout 2, callout 3).

Dry the glass and white plastic parts with a chamois or a cellulose sponge to prevent spotting.
Connect the power cable to an outlet, and then press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Check the scan settings

You can adjust scan settings from the printer control panel. The options and steps vary according to the type of control panel.

note:
Some of the scan settings that you can change from the control panel are default settings. Other settings affect the current job only. HP recommends using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to configure the default settings on network-connected printers with FutureSmart 3 or FutureSmart 4 control panels.

Check the resolution setting

Follow these steps to adjust the resolution setting:

note:
Printer resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Setting the resolution to a high value can improve sharpness, but also increases the file size and the scan time.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, scroll to and select the Administration button.
Open the Scan/Digital Send Settings menu.
Select the category of scan and send settings that you want to configure.
Open the Default Job Options menu, and then select Resolution.
Select one of the predefined options, and then select the Save button.
Select the Start button when you are ready to start scanning.

These settings are temporary. After you have finished the job, the printer returns to the default settings.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Scan, and then select the scan category that you need.
Select Options in the lower left corner, and then select File Type and Resolution.
Select the type of file (such as JPEG or TIFF), select one of the predefined options under Resolution, and then select Done to save the setting.
Select Send or Save, in accordance with the scan type.

Check the color settings (color models only)

Select the category of scan and send settings that you want to configure.
Open the Default Job Options menu.
Select the Color/Black button.
Select one of the predefined options, and then select the Save button.
Select the Start button.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Scan, and then select the scan category that you need.
Select Options in the lower left corner, and then select Color/Black.
Select one of the predefined options.
Select Send or Save, in accordance with the scan type.

Check the image adjustment settings

Adjust these additional settings to improve scan quality:

Darkness: Increase or decrease the amount of white and black used in colors in scanned images.
Contrast: Increase or decrease the difference between the lightest and the darkest color on the page.
Sharpness: Clarify or soften the image. For example, increasing the sharpness could make text appear crisper, but decreasing it could make photos appear smoother.
Background Cleanup: Remove faint colors from the background of scanned images. For example, if the original document is printed on colored paper, use this feature to lighten the background without affecting the darkness of the image.
Automatic Tone: Available for Flow printers only. For original documents that have at least 100 characters of text on the page, the printer can detect which edge is the top of the page, and it orients the scanned images appropriately. If some of the pages are upside-down in relation to the other pages, the resulting scanned image has all pages right-side-up. If some of the pages have a landscape orientation, the printer rotates the image so that the top of the page is at the top of the image.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, scroll to and select the Administration button.
Open the Scan/Digital Send Settings menu.
Select the category of scan and send settings that you want to configure.
Open the Default Job Options menu.
Select the Image Adjustment button.
Adjust the sliders to set the levels, and then select the Save button.
Select the Start button.

These settings are temporary. After you have finished the job, the printer returns to the default settings.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Scan, and then select the type of scan that you need.
Select Options in the lower left corner, and then select Image Adjustment.
Adjust the sliders to the desired levels, and then select Done.
Select Send or Save, in accordance with the scan type.

Optimize scan quality for text or pictures

Optimize the scan job for the type of image being scanned: text, graphics, or photos.

note:
These settings are temporary for both FutureSmart 3 and FutureSmart 4 control panels. After you have finished the job, the printer returns to the default settings.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select one of the buttons for the scan/send features:
- Save to Network Folder
- Save to Device Memory
- Save to USB
- Scan to SharePoint®
Select the More Options button, and then select the Optimize Text/Picture button.
Select one of the predefined options, or select the Manually adjust button, and then adjust the slider in the Optimize For area. Select the OK button.
Select the Start button.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Scan, and then select the type of scan that you need.
Select Options in the lower left corner, and then select Optimize Text/Picture.
Select an option. See the following descriptions to learn more:
- Text: For documents that contain mostly text. This option is also best suited for scanning documents with highlighter marks.
- Mixed: For documents that contain a mix of text and graphics
- Printed Picture: For line drawings and preprinted images, such as magazine clippings or pages from books. If you see bands of irregular intensity on copies, try selecting Printed Picture to improve the quality.
- Photograph: For photographic prints
Select Send or Save, in accordance with the scan type.

Check the output-quality settings

This setting adjusts the level of compression when saving the file. For the highest quality, select the highest setting.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, scroll to and select the Administration button.
Open the Scan/Digital Send Settings menu.
Select the category of scan and send settings that you want to configure.
Open the Default Job Options menu.
Select the Output Quality button.
Select one of the predefined options, and then touch the Save button.
Select the Start button.

These settings are temporary. After you have finished the job, the printer returns to the default settings.

From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Scan, and then select the scan category that you need.
Select Options in the lower left corner, and then select File Type and Resolution.
Select the type of file from the left menu, select one of the predefined options under Quality and File Size, and then select Done to save the setting.
Select Send or Save, in accordance with the scan type.

Follow these steps if the printed pages have toner smudges or skewed print:

Lift the document-feeder latch.

Remove any visible lint or dust from each of the feed rollers and the separation pad using compressed air or a clean, lint-free cloth moistened with warm water.

note:
Lift up the roller assembly so you can clean the second roller.

Close the document-feeder cover.

note:
Verify that the latch on the top of the document-feeder cover is completely closed.
