HP Printers - How to Check Ink or Toner Levels

Check ink or toner levels regularly to estimate how much ink or toner remains. When ink or toner becomes low, consider purchasing replacement supplies to have on hand. Install a new cartridge or reload toner when the ink or toner is depleted or no longer provides acceptable print quality.

Check ink or toner levels from the printer control panel

Many HP printers display ink and toner levels on the control panel.

Look for an Ink drop icon

, a Cartridge icon

, an Ink Levels menu, or a Toner Level indicator to view estimated ink or toner levels.

Check ink or toner levels (Windows)

Use one of the following methods to check your ink or toner levels from your Windows computer.

HP Smart app (Windows 10): Download the HP Smart app (in English) from the Windows store. Add your printer to view ink or toner levels on the home screen.
HP Print and Scan Doctor: Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor. Select your printer, click Printer in the top menu bar, and then click Supply Levels.
Printer software: Search Windows for HP, and then click your printer name or HP Solution Center. Click Maintain Your Printer, if necessary.

If you have not installed the HP printer software, go to HP Software and Driver Downloads. Identify your printer, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
HP Laser Printers: Search Windows for Easy Printer Manager, and then click HP Easy Printer Manager.

Check ink or toner levels (Mac)

Use the printer software to check ink or toner levels from your Mac computer.

Click the Apple icon , click System Preferences, and then click Printers and Scanners, Print & Fax, or Print & Scan.
Select your printer from the list, click Options & Supplies, and then click the Supplies tab.

Check ink or toner levels (Android, iOS)

Use the HP Smart app to check ink or toner levels from your Android or Apple iOS device.

Go to 123.hp.com to install the HP Smart app on your mobile device. Add your printer to view ink or toner levels on the home screen.

Check ink or toner levels (HP Ink Tank and Smart Tank printers)

If ink levels display as empty in HP printer software, you can visually check the printer ink levels using the ink tank window.

Maintain the printer ink levels between the maximum and minimum fill lines.

caution:
Ink levels below the minimum fill line can cause poor print quality. Ink levels above the maximum fill line can result in leaks. Damage to the printer as a result of improperly filling the ink tanks or using non-HP ink is not covered under warranty.

Go to HP Customer Support, type your printer model, and then look for a Replacing Cartridges document.

If your printer does not use cartridges, look for a Reloading Toner or Refilling Ink Tanks document.

Where do I purchase replacement ink or toner?

Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.

What if ink or toner levels shown are not correct?

Ink or toner levels shown in the HP printer software are estimates calculated from usage. These estimates become less accurate under the following conditions.

You are not using genuine HP ink or toner.
A remanufactured, refilled, or used cartridge is installed.
The printer uses ink tanks instead of cartridges.
The printer has undergone a full hardware reset.
