HP Scanjet Enterprise 7000n, 7500/Flow 7500, and 8500 fn 1 Flatbed Scanners - Replace the rollers and the separation pad

Introduction

This document provides instructions to removeand replace the automatic document feeder (ADF) rollers and the separationpad of HP Scanjet Enterprise Flatbed scanners. The rollers and theseparation pad are responsible for separating and properly feedingpages into the scanner.
note:
After cleaning the rollers, if experiencingrepeated document jam issues, then replace the rollers and the separationpad.
HP recommends to replacethe rollers and the separation pad every 100,000 scans or when indicated.
The procedure in this document applies to thefollowing Scanjet Enterprise Flatbed scanners:
  • HP Scanjet Enterprise 7000n DocumentCapture Workstation series
  • HP Scanjet Enterprise 7500 FlatbedScanner
  • HP Scanjet Enterprise Flow 7500 FlatbedScanner

Learn how to remove and replace the pick rollers and separation pad on HP Scanjet flatbed scanners equipped with an automatic document feeder, or ADF.

Step 1: Order an ADF Roller ReplacementKit

To order an ADF roller replacement kit, followthese steps:
  1. Select Search bypart number and type the correct part number for theADF roller replacement kit.
    Use the below table for the ADF roller replacement part.

  2. Click Search fora part.
The ADF roller replacement kit will include aroller assembly and a separation pad.

Step 2: Remove the roller assembly in theADF

Follow these steps to remove the roller assemblyin the ADF:
  1. Turn off the scanner and disconnectthe power cord.
  2. Lift up the ADF latch to openthe ADF hatch.

  3. Lift up the roller assembly.
  4. Locate the latch on the rollerassembly door and gently pull it down to open the assembly door.

  5. Hold down the assembly door gentlyand then hold the roller assembly on its sides. Pull the roller assemblydown, slide it to the left, and then pull it out to remove the rollerassembly from its slot. Dispose the old roller assembly.
    note:
    Make sure not to press down on the alignmenttabs or against any tabs to the right of the roller assembly.
    There might be a slight resistancewhen sliding the roller assembly.

Step 3: Replace the roller assembly

Follow these steps to replace the roller assembly:
  1. Take out the new roller assemblyfrom the roller replacement kit, remove it from its package, and makesure to hold the new rollers by the edges.
    note:
    Make sure not to touch the rollers withyour hands as it can lead to paper jams.
  2. Hold down the roller assemblydoor gently, and then insert the raised pin of the roller assemblyto the right until it is firmly locked into its slot.

  3. Close the roller assembly dooruntil it clicks into place.
    note:
    When you hear the click sound twice, itindicates that the roller assembly door is closed properly.

Step 4: Remove the separation pad

note:
HP recommends to replace the rollers andthe separation pad at the same time.
Make sure the ADF hatch is open, and follow thesesteps:
  1. Lift and hold the ADF input trayto access the separation pad assembly latch.
  2. Press in on the separation padlatch, and then lift up the separation pad latch to remove the separationpad assembly. Set the separation pad for disposal.

Step 5: Replace the separation pad

Follow these steps to replace the separation pad:
  1. Take out the new separation padfrom the ADF roller replacement kit, remove it from its package, andmake sure to hold the new separation pad by the edges.
    note:
    Make sure not to touch the separation padwith your hands as it can lead to scanning issues.
  2. Insert the rear edge of the newseparation pad into its slot.
    note:
    Make sure the spring below the pad is notbent.
    If the spring is damaged,the ADF has to be replaced.

  3. Press down on the front portionof the separation pad until it clicks into place.
    note:
    The click sound indicates the separationpad assembly is closed properly.

  4. To make sure the separation padassembly is closed properly, press down on the separation pad withthe eraser end of a pencil, and then release it.
    note:
    If the separation pad springs back up, thespring below the pad is in the correct position.

  5. Close the ADF hatch until itclicks into place.
    note:
    The click sound indicates that the ADF isclosed properly.
  6. Reconnect the power cord andturn on the scanner.

Step 6: Record the maintenance history

Make sure to turn on the product and use one ofthe following methods to update the maintenance history of the scanner:
note:
As the procedure to update the maintenancehistory for each scanner varies, it is recommended to refer to theuser manual for the procedure to update the replacement of rollers.

Method 1 – Use the control panel to updatethe maintenance history

Follow these steps to update the maintenance historyfor HP Scanjet Enterprise 7000n and 8500 fn1 Document Capture Workstationscanners:
  1. From the Home screen, touch Device Maintenance.
  2. Select the following menus:
    • Calibration/Cleaning
    • Clean Rollers
  3. Touch the Reset button to record the activity.

Method 2 – Use the HP Smart Document ScanSoftware

Follow these steps to update the maintenance historyfor HP Scanjet Enterprise 7500/ Flow 7500 Flatbed Scanner using the HP Smart Document Scan Software:
  1. Double-click the Scanner Tools Utility ( ) icon on your computer.
  2. On the Scanner ToolsUtility window, click the Maintenance tab.
  3. In the Record Replacement section, click Record Replacement.
  4. On the dialog box that displays,click Yes.
  5. Click OK on the Scanner Tools Utility window.
