HP Scanjet Flatbed Scanners - Clean the rollers and the separation pad

Introduction

This document provides instructions on how toclean the rollers and the separation pad on HP Scanjet Flatbed scanners.The rollers are located inside the automatic document feeder (ADF)hatch and the ADF duplex background unit. The separation pad is locatedinside the ADF hatch. The paper feed rollers in the ADF duplex backgroundfeeds the paper in the scanner and the pick up rollers in the ADFhatch picks the paper as it is scanned.
It is required to clean the rollers under anyof the following conditions:
  • Experience of repeated document jams.
  • The ADF does not pull pages into thepaper path.
  • The scanned images are elongated.
  • Frequent scanning of the followingtypes of documents: coated paper, chemically treated documents, documentswritten with pencils, or documents on which the toner has not fused.
The types of scanners might vary but the procedurein this document applies to most Scanjet Flatbed scanners. The followingare the list of HP Scanjet Flatbed scanners:

Overview of the steps for cleaning therollers and the separation pad

Follow these steps to clean the rollers and theseparation pad:

Step 1: Required items for cleaning

Make sure to have the following items to cleanthe rollers:
  • Clean, lint-free cloths
  • Clean water

Step 2: Clean the rollers and the separationpad in the ADF

To clean the rollers and the separation pad, followthese steps:
  1. Turn off the scanner.
  2. Lift up the ADF latch locatedon the front of the scanner to open the ADF hatch.
    For the following scanners, lift up the ADF hatch,and then lift the green lever to a vertical position.

    note:
    Do not press or adjust the alignment tabsor components when cleaning the rollers and the separation pad.

  3. Use a clean, lint-free clothslightly moistened with water to clean the rollers.
    note:
    Do not spray water or any cleaner directlyon any of the rollers.
  4. Rotate each roller with the tipof the cloth and wipe the roller until the entire roller is cleaned.
  5. Wipe the separation pad withthe moist clean, lint-free cloth.

  6. Wait for each roller and theseparation pad to dry completely.
    note:
    For scanners that have the green lever lifted,lower the green lever.
  7. Close the ADF hatch until itclicks into place.
    The clicksound indicates the ADF hatch is closed properly.

Step 3: Clean the rollers in the ADF duplexbackground unit

note:
This step is applicable only for scannersthat have a duplex background unit.
To clean the rollers in the ADF duplex backgroundunit, follow these steps:
  1. Lift up the ADF input tray inan upright position to locate the ADF duplex background unit.

  2. Press in on the ADF duplex backgroundtabs on either side, and then slide the ADF duplex background unitforward to remove it from its slot. Set the ADF duplex backgroundunit aside on a clean surface.

  3. Clean the two rollers in theADF duplex background slot and the rollers attached to the ADF duplexbackground unit with a moist clean, lint-free cloth.
    note:
    If the paper feed rollers have ink or otherstains that cannot be removed with warm water, use a clean, lint-freecloth slightly moistened with isoprophyl alcohol to clean the rollers.
    Do not use alcohol for the rollersand the separation pad inside the ADF hatch.
  4. Wait for each roller to dry completely.
  5. Slide the ADF duplex backgroundunit into its slot until both tabs click into place.
    note:
    Make sure not to touch the rollers whensliding the ADF duplex background unit into its slot.
  6. Pull down the ADF input tray.

Step 4: Record the maintenance history

Make sure to turn on the product and use one ofthe following methods to update the maintenance history of the scanner:
note:
As the procedure to update the maintenancehistory for each scanner varies, it is recommended to refer to theuser manual for the procedure to update the clean rollers counterin the maintenance history.

Method 1 – Use the control panel to updatethe maintenance history

note:
This procedure is applicable to scannersthat have a Touchscreen control panel.
Follow these steps to update the maintenance historyof the scanner:
  1. From the Home screen, touch Device Maintenance
  2. Select the following menus toopen it
    • Calibration/Cleaning
    • Clean Rollers
  3. Touch the Reset button to record the cleaning activity.

Method 2 – Use the HP Smart Document ScanSoftware

Follow these steps to update the maintenance historyof the scanner using the HP Smart Document Scan Software:
  1. Double-click the Scanner Tools Utility ( ) icon on your computer.
  2. On the Scanner ToolsUtility window, click the Maintenance tab.
  3. In the Record CleaningRollers section, click Record Cleaning.
  4. On the dialog box that displays,click Yes to log the cleaning activity andupdate the roller cleaning history.
  5. Click OK on the Scanner Tools Utility window.
