HP Printers - After Updating the Computer from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, Clicking Printer Assistant Displays a Prompt to Set Up Your Printer

This document pertains to inkjet printers produced in 2010 or later that use the HP Printer Assistant software.
After upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, the HP software prompts you to set up your printer when you try to access Printer Assistant. Links between the HP software icon on the desktop or in the Printers folder might have lost their connection to the printer driver during the upgrade.
Solution one: Reinstall the software
Follow these steps to reinstall the software, and then make sure that HP Printer Assistant works correctly.
Step one: Download and install the software from the HP website
Follow these steps to download and install the software. The Full Feature software includes HP Printer Assistant software.
The following video demonstrates how to download and install a Full Feature driver with a wireless connection in Windows 8.
If you have trouble viewing the video or to view the video in a different size, click or tap here to play the video on YouTube.
Important: When Printer Setup and Software displays, click Connect a new printer.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver (recommended), or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.
Step two: Make sure that Printer Assistant works
  1. Once the installation has completed, return to the Desktop and double-click the printer icon.
  2. If Printer Assistant opens, try to scan.
  3. If scanning works, close Printer Assistant and try to print using a software program you have printed with before.
  • If you can open Printer Assistant and are able to scan and print, your printer is installed and you can stop troubleshooting.
  • If these steps did not resolve your issue, continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Uninstall and reinstall the software
