HP Desktop PCs - Setting Up Windows 8 for the First Time

This document pertains to HP desktop computers with Windows 8.
This document contains information about setting up your computer and configuring Windows 8 for the first time. To set up your new computer, unpack the computer, power it on, and then complete the Windows 8 setup process.

Step 1: Unpacking the computer

Follow these steps to unpack the computer and other items from the box.
note:
Some computers have a separate tower and monitor, All-in-One computers have a monitor with a built-in tower.
  warning:
These procedures involve lifting heavy object(s). More than one person should lift the heavy object keeping the object close to the body using leg muscles instead of back muscles.
  1. Unpack the monitor, and tower if it is separate, from the box.

  2. Unpack the other items from the box.
  3. Select a location for the monitor, and tower if it is separate, that is near a power source.
  4. Adjust the display screen.
    1. Adjust the height of the screen so that the entire viewing area is just below your eye height. The height and angle of the screen should not cause neck or back pain during prolonged viewing.
    2. Adjust the distance of the screen so that the eyes of the person using it are at least one meter (three feet) away and only slightly angled down.

Step 2: Connecting the power cord to the computer

Follow these steps to connect the power cord to the computer to a power source.
  1. Connect the power cord to the computer and to a wall outlet.
  2. If the monitor and tower are separate, connect a second power cord to the monitor and to a wall outlet.
  3. If the monitor and tower are separate, connect the computer to the monitor with the video cable.
    note:
    Cables can be unsightly and should be hidden from view, such as by routing them behind the back of the desk or between the desk and a wall.

Step 3: Connecting the mouse and keyboard to the computer

Use one of the following sets of steps from the sections below.

Step 4: Setting up Windows 8

Follow the steps below to complete the setup process.
  1. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

      caution:
    To avoid damaging the data on the computer, do not restart your computer during the setup process.
    note:
    During the setup process, Windows 8 might take a long time to process an item without visual feedback on the screen to indicate progress. This is normal.
    When you turn on the computer for the first time the Windows 8 logo, and then the message Setup is preparing your computer for the first use display.
  2. On the Region and Language screen, select your region, language, keyboard layout, and time zone, and then Next at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Check I accept these license terms for Windows and this PC to accept the terms, and then click Accept.

  4. On the Register and Protect screen, type your full name and email address, and then click Next.

  5. On the Personalize screen, use the slider to select a menu color from the color bar.
  6. In the PC name field, type a name for your computer, and then click Next.
    note:
    The computer name cannot contain spaces for special characters.

  7. On the Get online screen, choose a wireless network from the list of available networks, and then click Next when prompted.
    note:
    If your network is not listed or if you are unable to connect to the internet click Skip this step to continue without a wireless connection to set it up later.

  8. From the bottom of the Settings screen, select Use express settings (HP recommended) to install important and recommended Windows updates and security features.

  9. Type your username and password to create a local account, and then click or tap Next.
    A Preparing your desktop screen displays.
    Please allow several minutes for Windows to save your settings. The desktop screen displays when setup is complete.

    note:
    Signing in with your Microsoft account makes setting up apps much simpler and you can take advantage of social media benefits. For more information see Learning How to Use Windows 8 Features and Apps.

Step 5: Changing the Date and Time settings

Follow these steps to check and adjust the date and time on your notebook.
  1. From the Start screen, click or tap the Desktop tile.

  2. On the bottom-right of the screen, look at the date and time.
  3. On the bottom-right of the screen, click or tap the date and time box.
    The Calendar displays.

  4. Click or tap Change date and time settings. The Date and Time window displays.

  5. Select Change date and time.

  6. Adjust the date and time as needed.

  7. Click or tap OK when finished.

Step 6: Things to do after setup

Congratulations! You have successfully setup Windows 8. HP recommends that you now open HP Support Assistant and scan for updates after Setup.
HP Support Assistant scans your computer and automatically detects and installs the latest software and drivers available from HP. For more information on how to download and use HP Support Assistant, see Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 8).
note:
If HP Support Assistant is not already installed on your computer, go to www.hp.com/go/hpsupportassistant to download the software.
