HP 3115m Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Memory Module

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the memory module for the HP 3115m Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
  • Small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment tool
  • Tweezers

Part numbers are subject to change.
The replacement part number will vary depending on the memory module that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Memory module removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2.   note:
    The following video depicts a specific configuration of the notebook. The same removal and replacement procedures apply to all configurations of the notebook.
  3.   note:
    The primary and expansion memory slots are both located under the rear accessory cover. The primary memory slot is located on the left and the expansion memory slot is located on the right.
    Push both arms outward simultaneously to release the memory module to the spring tension position.
  4.   caution:
    When handling a memory module, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory. Click here for instruction on "How Can You Prevent Damage to Memory Modules?".
    Grasp the memory module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
  5. Place the memory module in a static dissipative bag.
Memory module replacement
  1. Grasp the memory module by the edges and remove it from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Align the notch in the memory module with the key in the memory module slot on the system board.
  3. At an angle, gently insert the memory module into its slot on the system board.
  4.   caution:
    When handling a memory module, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory. Click here for instruction on "How Can You Prevent Damage to Memory Modules?".
    Press the memory module down to latch the arms.
