HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the 1394 Card

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the 1394 card for the HP Z420 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the 1394 card that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.
Summary of instructions
To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the 1394 card, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select 1394 card from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
1394 card removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the power extension cable from the card.
  3. Disconnect the front I/O 1394 cable from the card.
  4. Press on the PCI retention clamp clips until they release.
  5. Rotate the PCI retention clamp up against the rear of the chassis.
  6. Lift straight up on the card to remove it from the slot.
      note:
    If the card is not being replaced, cover the open slot on the PCI bulkhead with a metal slot cover.
1394 card replacement
  1. If a new 1394 card is being installed, remove the slot cover from the appropriate slot on the PCI bulkhead.
  2. Align the connectors on the card with the slot on the system board.
  3. Press down on the card until it is fully seated.
  4. Rotate the PCI retention clamp down over the PCI bulkhead.
  5. Press the two green PCI retention clamp tabs on the rear of the chassis until the clips lock into place.
  6. Connect the front I/O 1394 cable to the card. Connect the power extension cable to the card.
      note:
    The 1394 card requires auxiliary power. An extension cable from the drive power cable is used to extend the power to the 1394 card.
