Issue

A Load Paper Plain, Press [OK] for available media error message displays on the product control panel, and the product does not pick up or feed the paper from the tray. The product might make noises as though it is printing, but no paper moves through it.

Experiencing frequent or recurring paper pick issues?

Follow these guidelines to help prevent paper pick issues:

Load at least 10 sheets of paper into the tray, but do not overload the tray.
Load paper correctly, and then push the paper all the way into the tray.
Use only one type of paper at a time in the tray.
Store paper in a cool, dry place.
Use only clean unused paper in the tray.
Avoid printing on paper that is dusty.
Wait for the product to complete a job or to display an 'Out of paper' message before reloading paper.

Causes

Any of the following issues can cause paper pick issues:

The paper tray is empty or overloaded.
The paper is curled.
The print side, or shiny side, of the paper is not loaded in the paper tray face up. For photo paper, always load the rougher side of the paper facing down.
The paper is too slick for the product.
The paper might not be engaged with the feed rollers.
The paper-width guide is pressed against the paper stack too tightly.
The paper settings in the print driver do not match the paper loaded in the paper tray.
The rubber paper-feed rollers are dusty.

Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Turn off the Manual Feed mode

Choose your operating system for steps to turn off the Manual Feed mode.

Windows XP
1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start (), and then click Printers and Faxes. The Printers and Faxes window opens.
2. Right-click the icon for your product, and then click Printing Preferences from the drop down list. The Printing Preferences window opens.
3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
4. From the Source is drop-down list, select Auto Select, click Apply, and then click OK.
5. Try to print.
- If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Windows Vista
1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then click Printers. The Printers window opens.
2. Right-click the icon for your product, and then click Printing Preferences from the drop down list. The Printing Preferences window opens.
3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
4. From the Source is drop-down list, select Auto Select, click Apply, and then click OK.
5. Try to print.
- If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Windows 7
1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then click Printers and Devices. The Printers and Devices window opens.
2. Right-click the icon for your product, and then click Printing Preferences from the drop down list. The Printing Preferences window opens.
3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
4. From the Source is drop-down list, select Auto Select, click Apply, and then click OK.
5. Try to print.
- If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Reset the printer

Resetting the product can clear a paper feed issue. Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Reset the printer

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
Turn the printer on.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
On the product control panel, press Setup.
Use the Arrow buttons () to select Reports, and then press OK.
Press the Right Arrow button () to select Config report, and then press OK. The self-test report prints.

If these steps resolved the issue, and the test page prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue with the next solution.
If the test page does not print, continue with the next solution.

Solution three: Check the condition of the paper, and then reload it

Paper feed issues might result from dusty, torn, wrinkled, wet, or folded paper in the tray. The quality of the paper can also make a difference. Use only good quality paper that meets product specifications. Follow these steps to check the condition of the paper.

Step one: Check the condition of the paper

Remove the stack of paper from the tray.
Check for obstructions inside the tray. Use a flashlight to view the mechanism inside the tray to make sure that nothing blocks the paper from engaging with the rollers. Even small pieces of paper can cause paper feed issues.

note:
If you find obstructions in the paper path, skip to the section on cleaning the rollers.
Examine the condition of the paper, and then replace any ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper.
Make sure that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type. Never load mixed types of paper in the tray. The product can only process one type of paper at a time.
Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
Make sure that the stack of paper contains no fewer than 10 sheets and no more than 25 sheets of paper.

note:
You need to use 10 to 25 sheets of paper only for purposes of these troubleshooting steps. When the issue is resolved, you can resume loading paper according to the paper tray capacity specifications for your product.

Step two: Reload the paper

Remove any loose paper from the input tray.
Slide the paper width and the paper length guides to their outermost positions.

With the print side down, reinsert the stack of paper into the tray until it rests against the rear edge of the tray. Then slide the paper guides in until they rest against the edges of the paper.

Try to print.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Check the print settings

Follow these steps to make sure that the paper type and size settings are correct for your print job.

note:
The product might not pick up paper if the paper size and type in the input tray does not match the paper size and type settings in the product software. This feature helps to avoid wasting ink and paper.

Return to the document you were trying to print when the issue occurred.
Click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.

Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box. Depending on the software program, the button might be Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
Click the tab that provides paper type and size settings. The tab might be Features or Paper/Quality.
From the Type is drop-down list, select the paper type that matches the paper in the product.
From the Size is drop-down list, select the paper size that matches the paper in the product.

For example, if you have 101.6 x 152.4 mm (4 x 6 inch) photo paper loaded in the paper tray, select 4x6in. or 4x6in. (tab).

If the required paper size is not in the drop-down list, follow these steps to create a custom paper size.
1. Select Custom from the Size is drop-down list, or the Custom tab.
2. In the Custom Paper Size dialog box, type a name for the new custom size.
3. In the Width and Height boxes, or the Width and Length boxes, type the dimensions.
4. Select the unit of measurement, and then click Save.
5. Click OK to close the Custom Paper Size dialog box, and then click OK again to close the Properties dialog box.
  
  note:
  You must exit the Properties dialog box to apply your changes.
6. Open the Properties dialog box again, and then select the new custom size from the Size is drop-down list.
Click OK, and then click OK again to print the document.

If the document prints, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
If the document prints on plain white paper, but not a special paper type, there is no need to continue troubleshooting. The issue is probably related to the paper that you were trying to print on. Review the Experiencing frequent or recurring paper pick issues? and Causes sections at the beginning of this document.
If the document does not print, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Inspect and clean the paper pick roller

Paper feed issues can occur if dust, paper fiber, and other debris has accumulated on the paper pick roller, or if the roller is worn or damaged. Follow these steps to inspect and then clean the paper pick roller.

Step one: Remove and inspect the paper pick roller

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Open the cartridge door.

Remove the cartridge. Grasp the handle on the cartridge, and then pull the cartridge toward you to remove it.

Locate the paper pick roller.

Release the small white tabs on each side of the paper pick roller, and then rotate the roller toward you.

Gently pull the roller up and out to remove it from the product.

Inspect the roller for wear or damage.

If the roller is worn or damaged, replace the roller. To order a new roller, visit the ordering supplies and accessories page on HP.com.
If the roller is not worn or damaged, continue to the next step.

Step two: Clean the paper pick roller

Gather the following materials:
- Two clean, lint-free cloths that will not come apart or leave fibers
- Isopropyl alcohol
Dab a cloth in the isopropyl alcohol, and then scrub the roller.

warning:
Alcohol is flammable. Keep the alcohol and cloth away from an open flame. Before you close the product and plug in the power cord, allow the alcohol to dry completely.

Wipe the roller again with a clean, dry cloth to remove any loosened dirt.

Step three: Reinsert the paper pick roller

Position the roller in the slot. The circular and rectangular slots on each side prevents you from installing the roller incorrectly.

Reinsert the roller. Rotate the top of the roller away from you until both sides snap into place.

Reinsert the cartridge. Make sure that the cartridge is securely seated in the product.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution six: Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
