HP Deskjet F4200, F4400, F4500 All-in-One Printer Series and Deskjet F735 All-in-One Printer - 'Out of disk space' Message Displays in Microsoft Windows XP When Scanning


During scanning, the error message 'Out of disk space' displays in Microsoft Windows XP.
Try the solutions in the order presented until the error is resolved.

Solution one: Rescan the document at a lower resolution

If the current scan resolution setting is higher than 72 dpi, set the resolution to 72 dpi, and then scan the document again.
If the document scans successfully, the original resolution setting was too high.
Scanning documents at a high resolution or color depth creates extremely large files. Do not scan an image at a resolution that is higher than necessary. Scan using only the resolution at which the image will be viewed or printed. Use these guidelines for selecting the proper scanning resolutions:
  • The All-in-One prints a photo in Best quality mode on photo paper at 600 dpi. Scanning at a resolution higher than 600 dpi is not necessary. HP PhotoREt technology improves the image quality by increasing the depth of color when printing the image.
  • The average computer monitor displays images at approximately 72 dpi. Scanning an image at a resolution higher than 72 dpi will not improve the look of the image on the monitor, but the image file will require more disk space.

Solution two: Close unnecessary software programs

To make more computer memory available for scanning, close all software programs that are not currently in use. Try the scan again.

Solution three: Manage and modify the space on the hard disk

Follow these steps to check and modify the amount of disk space available on the hard drive.

Step one: Compare the amount of available hard disk space and the preview size of the file you want to scan

Check to make sure the size of the file you want to scan does not exceed the amount of space available on the hard disk.
  1. Begin the scan again, and then stop when the preview of the scan display on the computer.
  2. In the lower right portion of the preview, locate the file size and take note of it.
  3. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  4. Right-click the hard disk icon, and then click Properties to view the amount of hard disk space available. If there is more than one hard disk drive or a drive partition, repeat this process for each listed drive letter. Do not repeat this process for network drives.
  5. Compare the file size of the scan preview to the amount of space available on the hard disk. If the size of the file is close to or larger than the amount of hard disk space available, the scan will not complete successfully unless more disk space is made available.

Step two: Check the virtual memory settings

Virtual memory is temporary disk space on the hard disk that the computer uses to print and scan documents. The computer should have over 200 MB of disk space available for virtual memory. If the hard disk does not have sufficient virtual memory, trying to print or scan might cause an error.
Follow these steps to modify the size of the virtual memory available.
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Performance section, click Settings.
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. In the Virtual memory section, click Change. Both the Initial and Maximum settings should be less than the reported Space available for the hard disk. The Initial size setting should be about 200 MB, and should be higher than or equal to the recommended paging file size shown in the lower section of the dialog box. The amount of memory in the initial size setting will be reserved on the hard disk for virtual memory.
    The maximum amount allowable can be anything over the Initial size setting, but it should be at least twice the Initial size setting.
  6. Based on the preceding information, make any necessary changes to the Initial size and Maximum size settings.
  7. Click Set, and then click OK.

Step three: Empty the Recycle Bin

Follow these steps to delete items in the Recycle Bin.
  1. On the Windows Desktop, double-click the Recycle Bin.
    If a file was deleted by mistake and is currently listed in the Recycle Bin, select the entry, click File, and then click Restore. After the Recycle Bin is empty, the file cannot be restored.
  2. Click File, and then click Empty Recycle Bin.
    Windows empties the contents of the Recycle Bin from the hard disk.
  3. Click Yes.
  4. Close the Recycle Bin.

Step four: Run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files

Follow these steps to run Disk Cleanup.
  1. Click Start, click Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. Disk Cleanup prompts you to select a drive.
  2. Select the hard disk drive to clean, and then click OK. Disk Cleanup analyzes the hard disk drive and presents a report.
  3. Select the following items from the report:
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Downloaded Program Files
    • Recycle Bin
    • Temporary Files
  4. Click OK.

Step five: Remove unnecessary software programs

Follow these steps to remove unnecessary software programs.
  1. Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Select a software program to remove, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. Repeat these steps for all software programs to be removed.
  4. If large software programs are removed, run Scan Disk and Defrag on the hard disk drive. These options are located in the System Tools section of Accessories.


The 'Not enough disk space' error occurs when the computer does not have enough memory available for the All-in-One to scan.
The HP All-in-One software uses Random-Access Memory (RAM) and hard disk memory in the computer to scan complex documents at high resolution. The HP All-in-One software does not use the memory inside the All-in-One because using the memory in the computer is more efficient.
When scanning a document from an All-in-One, Windows stores and manages the data on the hard disk in a temporary location called a temp or spool file. Other applications and programs also store temporary data on the hard disk. This process is called virtual memory or swap disk.
The computer must have enough memory or extra space available on the hard disk to print and scan successfully.
