This document applies to the HP Photosmart C6150, C6170, C6175, C6180, C6183, C6185, C6186, and C6188 All-in-Ones.

Issue

You printed a diagnostic page and found colors that are very different from the colors on the cartridge label, or entirely missing colors.

Black, Yellow , Light Cyan, Cyan, Light Magenta, Magenta

Solution

  1. Press the Setup button.
  2. Press the down arrow button until Tools is highlighted and then press OK.
  3. Press the down arrow button until Clean Printhead is highlighted and then press OK. A test page is printed.
  4. Examine the test page. If the print quality of the page is good, stop here. If the print quality is bad, go on to the next step for further cleaning.
  5. Open the Printer Toolbox. There are two ways to do this:
    • Open HP Solution Center. Select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox.
    • Open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel, then right-click your printer icon and choose Properties. Click Printing Preferences. Click the Features tab, then click the Printer Services button.
  6. The Printer Toolbox opens. On the Device Services tab, click Clean the Printheads , then follow the on-screen instructions. Up to three levels of cleaning are available. Discard or recycle the page that prints.
  7. If cleaning the printheads once does not help, follow the directions in step 6, but use the next level of cleaning.
  8. If the highest level of cleaning does not help, contact HP Customer Support for more support options.

Cause and prevention

Color mix is usually caused by a material touching the nozzles. Ink can wick along the material and travel from nozzle to nozzle. When different colors of ink mix in this way, the result is muddy, inaccurate colors.
Color mix may also be caused by using non-HP ink cartridges. If the ink in the non-HP ink cartridge is incorrect, it can cause poor print quality with muddy, inaccurate colors.
Missing colors occur when the printhead nozzles dry out.
  • Print at least once a month to keep the print printheads in good working order.
  • Always turn the printer off by pressing the button on the printer control panel, rather than by unplugging the printer or by using a power strip. Turning the printer off properly allows it to protect the printheads.
