HP discourages using NiCd batteries in HP digital cameras because they do not last as long, they are environmentally unfriendly, and they must be fully discharged before recharging for best performance.

Photo Lithium batteries: Non-rechargeable
Performance
Non-rechargeable Photo Lithium batteries will yield the longest battery life of any AA battery, surpassing Ni-MH by 50-100% and surpassing Alkaline by 100-500%, depending on the power consumption and usage of the camera.
Cost
While they are more expensive than Alkaline batteries, their additional energy capacity makes the cost the same or less per shot than Alkaline batteries.
Low Temperature Use
Photo Lithium batteries are the best choice for low temperature use.
Ni-MH batteries: Rechargeable
Cost
Ni-MH batteries provide the lowest cost overall solution for users who take a lot of pictures (more than the equivalent of a roll of film per month) or use a lot of high-power features.
Self Discharge
The largest disadvantage to Ni-MH batteries is their fast self-discharge rate of 1-2% per day whether the batteries are in a camera or not.
Conditioning
New Ni-MH batteries should be completely charged and discharged 2-4 times to achieve their full capacity.
For optimum performance, the battery should be discharged to a level below 1V and should be cycled between fully charged and fully discharged regularly.
Cycle Life
Rechargeable batteries will eventually wear out. While Ni-MH batteries can be charged up to a thousand times, many users begin to see a decline in performance after one to two years of use or less if the use is particularly strenuous.
If you have been getting acceptable battery life and then see a decrease in life, either quickly or slowly over time, a worn-out battery may be the cause.
Storing or charging the batteries in high temperature conditions will accelerate this type of aging.
Memory Effect
Ni-MH batteries do not generally suffer from "memory effect." For top performance, however, discharging completely and recharging is recommended when batteries are new, recently out of long term storage, or if they have not been discharged completely in ten or more charge cycles.
Dock and charger
Ni-MH batteries may be left in the camera on an HP Photosmart camera dock or in an HP external battery charger until needed .
For maximum life, always store batteries in a cool location.
Excessive Heat
Do not expose the battery to excessive heat. Permanent damage or accelerated aging can result if the battery is exposed to temperatures above 110 F (43 C). Do not leave batteries in a hot car in the summer.
Long-Term Storage
Always store batteries in a dry, cool location. When storing batteries for more than one year, charge them at least once a year to prevent deterioration.
NiCd batteries: Rechargeable

Self Discharge
NiCd batteries lose their charge at approximately 1% per day whether the batteries are in a camera or not.
NiCd batteries offer the advantage of retaining their charge while unused, unlike Ni-MH batteries, but have shorter lives and must be discharged completely before recharging.
Memory Effect
If a NiCd battery is charged repeatedly and has been only partially discharged, it will develop a lower voltage along with a lower capacity for holding a charge. Make sure to completely discharge the battery prior to recharging to avoid memory effect.
Conditioning
Reverse the lowered capacity by conditioning the batteries. Completely discharge and recharge the batteries three to four times to restore normal voltage to the battery.
Oxyride batteries: Non-rechargeable
Performance
Oxyride batteries perform similarly to high quality Alkaline batteries at low loads, but may perform significantly better than Alkaline batteries at higher loads such as those found in digital cameras.
Comparison to Photo Lithium and Ni-MH
Oxyride batteries will still provide substantially lower performance than Ni-MH or non-rechargeable Photo Lithium batteries in most digital cameras.
Alkaline batteries: Non-rechargeable
Performance
Although cheapest and easiest to find, Alkaline batteries yield the lowest performance in digital cameras. They lose capacity at high power drains, such as flash and zoom, and at low temperatures. Skiers and other winter outdoor enthusiasts may find them unsatisfactory.
Availability
Alkaline batteries are frequently available in three types:
  • High drain (ultra, titanium, maximum etc.)
  • Regular
  • Industrial, Heavy-Duty, etc.
Quality
The high drain batteries are a premium product designed to operate better under heavy loads than the standard product and usually last far longer in digital cameras as a result.
Low Quality Batteries
"Industrial" or "Heavy Duty" batteries should never be used in digital cameras. They will provide unacceptable performance.
Purchasing
Use a reputable name-brand battery. Bargain batteries tend to perform very poorly in digital cameras.
Emergency Use
The best use of Alkaline batteries is in an emergency situation where no other battery type is available.
