HP Vectra PCs - PC is Beeping, What Do the Beeps Mean

Issue:
PC is beeping at POST. Refer to the following matrix to identify what the beeps mean and how to troubleshoot/correct issues.
Solution
  1. Verify that the machine is equipped with e-DiagTools. Refer to the following list of machines that are equipped with this tool:
    • HP Vectra VL400 PC
    • HP Vectra VL410 PC
    • HP Vectra VL420 PC
    • HP Vectra VL800 PC
    • HP Vectra XE310 PC
    • HP Vectra XE320 PC
    • HP e-PC 40
    • HP e-PC 42
    • HP Kayak XM600 PC Workstation
    • HP Brio BA410 PC
  2. Troubleshoot the number of beeps that the e-DiagTool emits. Refer to the following table for additional information:
    Number of Beeps
    Issue
    Solution
0 Beeps. Number of beeps emitted: 0 with "buzz" audio signal
    Power button stuck
Press the power button for 5 seconds, while the PC is OFF (to recall last pre-boot diagnostics error) and no beeps are heard, this means that all pre-boot tests are OK. If the PC still doesn't work, run the HP e-DiagTools System Tests on the PC to further test the hardware.
Information is available at http://www.hp.com/desktops/diagtools or run HP Instant Support under Windows.
Number of beeps emitted: 0 - without "buzz" audio signal
No Power (the PC does not boot)
Press the Power button and check if Power LED is on.
    1. If a light does not come on when the Power button is held down, power is not coming to the system board.
      • Check the power cord is connected at both ends
      • Make sure the voltage setting is correct for your country (refer to the User's Guide for more information)
      • Make sure everything is properly connected within the PC
      • Make sure the power switch mechanism is working (check the status panel connection to the system board).
      • If the problem persists, replace the Power Supply.
    2. If a light comes on when Power button is held down, power is coming to the system board.
      • Clear CMOS using the switch on the system board
      • Make sure the voltage setting is correct for your country (refer to the User's Guide for more information)
      • Make sure everything is properly connected within the PC
      • If the problem persists, replace the motherboard.
    1 Beep
Processor absent, not seated properly, or processor socket not closed
    1. Check to see that the processor is seated properly in the socket
    2. Check the processor for obvious problems with the pins and reseat the processor.
    3. If Steps 1 and 2 do not fix the problem, replace the motherboard (the processor socket itself is probably damaged).
    2 Beeps
Power supply is in protected mode
      note:
This error does not necessarily indicate a power supply failure.
    1. Determine whether the machine is a Vectra VL400 or a Brio BA410. If the machine is neither, continue on to the other steps.
If the PC is a Vectra VL400, the problem could be due to the coin-sized battery on the motherboard being unseated or dead. Does the PC boot if the intrusion switch cable is unplugged and the battery is removed? If so, reseating or replacing the battery should fix the problem.
If the PC is a Brio BA410 and if it was unplugged from the mains the power supply may not starting up properly the first try you press the power button. Press the power button a second time to boot the PC.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the PC while checking all items. Once the power supply is in protected mode, power must be unplugged for at least 15 seconds before the system will power up
    3. Make sure the voltage setting on the power supply is set correctly for your country. (Refer to the User's Manual for more details).
    4. The power supply may be too hot: check the fan to see if there is a blockage or to see if the fan is working.
    5. There may be a short circuit on the motherboard: unplug PCI cards and power from all devices (FDD, HDD, CDD) and try to power up again.
    3 Beeps
No Memory, bad memory modules, incompatible memory module
    1. If the PC is a Brio BA410, for certain types of memory, the issue could be related to a timing issue involving the BIOS.
Upgrade the BIOS to version IO.07.07 or later, and check whether the problem persists before performing additional troubleshooting.
    2. Ensure that the memory is properly seated in socket.
    3. Reseat memory.
    4. Ensure that HP memory is installed in the system.
    5. Ensure that memory types have not been mixed (PC100 with PC133 for example) 6 If none of these work, replace the memory.
    4 Beeps
    Video hardware issue
    1. Depending on the model of HP PC, the video failure is likely due to an add-on video card or the onboard video chip.
Remove any added video cards (if applicable).
    2. Try to boot using onboard video (if applicable).
    3. Clear CMOS using switch on motherboard to reset hardware configuration.
    4. If all tests fail, contact your Support Provider.
    5 Beeps
    PnP/PCI initialization problem
    1. Remove all PCI cards.
    2. Clear CMOS.
    3. Try to boot.
    4. If this test fails, PCI slots may be bad, replace the motherboard.
    6 Beeps
    Corrupted BIOS
Run the Crisis Recovery procedure (APPLIES to VECTRA only).
To run the Crisis Recovery procedure for the Vectra, perform the following steps:
    1. Create a crisis recovery floppy.
    2. Flip the crisis recovery switch.
    3. Boot from the floppy.
    4. Reset the switch, remove floppy, and reboot.
    7 Beeps
    Motherboard Issue
    1. Clear the CMOS.
    2. If the problem persists, replace the motherboard.
