HP OfficeJet Pro 9720, 9730 Printers - First time printer setup

To set up a printer for the first time, remove the printer from the box, connect the power cord, load paper, install the cartridges, and then go to 123.hp.com to download and install the printer software.

Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all tape, stickers, and packing materials.

CAUTION:

To avoid setup problems and potential printer damage, make sure all internal packing material is removed, all doors are closed and trays reinserted before turning on the printer.

  1. Remove the printer from the box.

  3. Remove all tape and packing materials from the outside of the printer.

  4. Lift the scanner lid, and then remove the protective foam from the scanner glass.

  5. Lower the scanner lid.

  6. Remove all hardware and materials from the box.

  7. Recycle the box and packing materials.

Connect the power cord and set your preferences

Plug the printer into an electrical outlet, turn on the printer, and then set your preferences.

Note:

Do not connect a USB cable at this time. A connection to your computer is established during software installation.

  1. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end of the power cord into an electrical outlet.

  2. If the printer does not turn on automatically, press the Power button.

  3. On the printer control panel, touch your preferred language, and then touch Confirm.

  4. Touch your country/region, and then touch Confirm.

Load paper into the input tray

Load plain paper into the input tray.

  1. Open the input tray.

  3. Load plain white paper into the input tray with the short-edge forward and the print-side down.

  4. Slide in the paper guides until they rest against the edges of the paper.

Install the ink cartridges

Install the HP ink cartridges that came with your printer.

  1. Open the front door.

    The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

  2. Remove the cartridges from their package.

  3. Insert each ink cartridge into its slot.

    CAUTION:

    Only grasp the sides of each cartridge to avoid print quality issues and getting ink on your hands.

  4. Close the front door.

  5. When the printer finishes initializing, touch OK.

Align the printhead

The printer prints an Alignment Page to align the printhead.

  1. Touch OK when prompted to align the printhead.

  2. Open the scanner lid, place the Alignment Page with the print-side down on the scanner glass, and then align the page with the indicated corner.

  3. Close the scanner lid, and then touch Scan.

    The printer scans the Alignment Page, and an Alignment Successful message displays on the control panel.

Install the printer software

Your HP printer hardware is now set up, and you can install the printing software. Do not attempt to connect the printer to a computer or mobile device until instructed to do so during software installation or app setup.

Go to 123.hp.com, and then follow the step-by-step instructions to download the latest version of HP software and complete setup.

Note:

An HP account is required for HP+ printers, if you do not have an account, you can create one during the software installation process.
