HP DeskJet 3510 printers - Paper jam error

During a print job, the printer stops feeding pages, and a Paper Jam. Clear jam, and then press OK message displays on the printer control panel. The Power light on the printer control panel might also blink fast. This indicates that paper might be jammed inside the printer.

Note:

Paper jams can be real or false. The printer might report a paper jam even when there is no jammed paper. The following steps apply to both real and false paper jams.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Clear jammed paper from the printer

Paper jams can occur in multiple areas of the printer. If you cannot find the paper jam in one area, continue to the next area until the jam is located.

Clear jammed paper from the input tray

Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the input tray area.

Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
While the printer is still on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Warning:
To avoid risk of injuries or electric shock, you must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer.
Locate the input tray on the rear of the printer.
Pull the paper out of the input tray to remove the paper jam.
Look inside the input tray, and then remove any foreign materials such as paper clips, debris, or other objects that might have fallen inside.
Use your fingers to move the pick mechanism located inside the input tray, and then remove any foreign objects or debris.
If you do not see any debris, tilt the printer on its side, move the pick mechanism, and then remove any foreign objects. Debris might fall out of the printer.
If debris does not fall out, look inside the input tray, and then remove any foreign materials such as paper clips or other objects that might have fallen inside.
Return the printer to its normal position.
Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the output tray

Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the output tray area.

Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

Warning:
To avoid risk of injuries or electric shock, you must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer.
Locate the output tray in the front of the printer.
Pull the paper out of the output tray to remove the paper jam.
Remove any jammed paper and bits of torn paper from the tray. To avoid tearing any whole sheets of paper, pull the paper with both hands.
Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the ink cartridge access area

Remove any loose or jammed paper that is accessible from the ink cartridge access area.

Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

To avoid risk of injuries or electric shock, you must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer.
Open the ink cartridge access door.
Remove any jammed paper from inside the printer.
Close the ink cartridge access door.
Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Clear jammed paper from underneath the printer

Only perform these steps if printer continues to report a paper jam after clearing jammed paper from the input and output trays and printhead access area.

Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

Warning:
To avoid risk of injuries or electric shock, you must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer.
Tilt the printer and rest it on its backside, so that the bottom of the printer is facing you.

CAUTION:
Do not turn the printer upside down because ink might leak from the cartridges.
Press in both tabs on the cleanout door.
Remove any jammed paper or foreign materials from the inside of the printer.

CAUTION:
If the paper tears while removing it, check inside the door for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams might occur.
To close the cleanout door, push the door forward until it snaps into place.
Return the printer to its normal position.
Look inside the input tray for any foreign objects that might have shifted when the printer was tilted back, and then remove any foreign objects found.
Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Make sure the carriage can move freely

Make sure the carriage can move from one side of the printer to the other with no obstructions.

Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
Open the ink cartridge access door.
Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
While the printer is still on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Warning:
To avoid risk of injuries or electric shock, you must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer.
Check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then remove any paper or objects that you find.

CAUTION:
If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If pieces of paper remain in the printer, more paper jams can occur.
Reach inside the printer through the ink cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer, move the carriage to the left side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
Make sure the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the printer, and then to the right side.
Close the ink cartridge access door.
Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Clean the paper feed rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Clean the rollers to help prevent future paper jams.

Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

Warning:
To avoid risk of injuries or electric shock, you must disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer.
Lightly dampen a lint-free cotton swab with distilled or filtered water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Raise the input tray.
Lift and hold the input tray shield.
Look down through the open input tray and find the gray paper pick rollers. You might need a flashlight to illuminate the area.
Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
Press the cloth against the rollers and rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.
Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).
Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the printer.

Clean the paper feed rollers

Cleaning the paper feed rollers can help clear paper jams.

Remove any paper from the input tray.
On the printer control panel, press the down arrow to select Settings, and then press OK.
Press the down arrow to select Tools, and then press OK.
Press the down arrow to select Clean Paper Feed, and then press OK.

The printer cleans the paper feed rollers.

Clean ink smears

Cleaning ink smears can help clear paper jams and optimize print quality.

Load paper in the input tray.
Press the down arrow to select Settings, and then press OK.
Press the down arrow to select Tools, and then press OK.
Press the down arrow to select Clean Ink Smears, and then press OK.

The printer feeds one page and makes noise for about one minute.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the power source.
Wait 60 seconds.
Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

Note:
HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.

Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
