HP LaserJet MFP M139-M142 printers - Er/03 or 'Out of Paper' error, printer does not pick up paper

After sending a print job, the Attention light blinks and Er/03 displays on the printer control panel. An Out of Paper error message might also display on the computer or HP Smart app.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Check the paper, and then reload it

Check the paper stack for defects, such as wrinkled, torn, or bent pieces that might cause a pick-up issue.

  1. Remove any paper from the input tray.

  2. Remove any bent, wrinkled, or torn paper in the stack.

  3. Check for and remove any obstructions inside the paper tray. Make sure nothing blocks the paper from engaging with the rollers.

  4. Load the stack of paper into the paper tray.
