HP PCs - Computer Is Slow When Used for the First Time (Windows 10)

This document is for HP and Compaq computers with Windows 10.

During setup of your new computer, performance might be slow due to automatic updates performed by the Windows Update tool, Microsoft Store, HP Support Assistant, or McAfee LiveSafe. The size and number of updates required can impact new PC performance during download and installation.

note:
If your PC is not new but performance has slowed over time, go to Improving PC Performance (Windows 10) for more help.

HP recommends actively checking for and completing all available updates to make sure performance is not affected. Check the following tools or apps to make sure all available updates are complete.

Windows Update

Open Windows Update, and then download and install any required updates.

In Windows, search for and open Windows Update settings.
Click Check for updates.

Windows automatically downloads and installs any available updates.
Restart the PC to complete the updates.
After the computer restarts, repeat the previous steps until Your device is up to date displays.

You might have to repeat this process several times until Windows is completely updated.

Microsoft Store apps

Open the Microsoft Store app to check for and download app updates.

On the taskbar, click the Microsoft Store icon.

If there is no icon in the taskbar, search for and open Microsoft Store in Windows.
Click the More Options icon, and then click Downloads and updates.
Apps requiring updates begin to download and install.

Up to 3 updates download and install at the same time.

HP drivers and BIOS

HP driver and BIOS updates are recommended to improve performance, particularly after Windows updates. Use HP Support Assistant to download and install driver and BIOS updates.

Step 1: Make sure you have the latest version of HP Support Assistant

For best performance, make sure you have the latest version of the HP Support Assistant.

On the taskbar, click the HP Support Assistant icon.

If there is no icon in the taskbar, search for and open HP Support Assistant in Windows.

note:
If HP Support Assistant is not installed, go to the HP Support Assistant webpage to download the latest version.
Click About, and then click Check for latest version.

If there is a new version available, a prompt to apply the update displays. If there is no update available, skip to the next step.
Click Yes to download and install the update.
If a prompt to restart the computer displays, restart the PC.
Repeat these steps and update HP Support Assistant until the app version is current.

Step 2: Update the drivers and BIOS

Download and install updates for drivers and the BIOS with HP Support Assistant.

On the My devices tab, click Check for updates and messages.
Click Updates to view the list of available driver and BIOS updates.
Select the updates to apply, and then click Download and install.

note:
Some updates might require user interaction to progress.
Continue with the updates until all driver and BIOS updates are complete.
Restart your computer.

McAfee LiveSafe

McAfee LiveSafe is pre-installed on your computer to protect against malware or other malicious attacks. System performance might be affected while updates are installing.

Check for updates manually using the following steps.

Right-click on the McAfee LiveSafe icon.

note:
If you do not see the icon, click the up-arrow in the Taskbar to display any hidden icons.
Select Check for Updates.
The app downloads and installs any available updates.
