HP ProBook 4540s Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Hard Disk Drive

This document pertains only to HP ProBook 4540s Notebook PC with the following case design:

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the hard disk drive for HP ProBook 4540s Notebook PC.

Tools required

Phillips-head P1 screwdriver

Minimum skill level

The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the hard disk drive that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

Remove the battery.

Remove the service door.

Remove the four 4-mm P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive to the base enclosure.

Access and grasp the Mylar tab on the hard disk drive carrier and slide the hard disk drive to disconnect it from its connector on the system board.

Pull up on the Mylar tab on the hard disk drive to lift and remove the hard disk drive out of the base enclosure.

Remove the four 3.5-mm thick P1 Phillips-head screws that secure the hard disk drive to the hard disk drive bracket.

Carefully unwrap the Mylar covering.

Lift and remove the hard disk drive from its carrier.
9
Place the hard disk drive in a static dissipative bag.

Remove the hard disk drive from the static dissipative bag.

Place the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bracket and re-wrap the Mylar covering around the hard disk drive.

Replace the four 3.5-mm thick P1 Phillips-head screws to secure the hard disk drive to the hard disk drive bracket.

With the Mylar tab-side up, lower the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay.

Grasp the Mylar tab and slide the hard drive to fully seat the hard disk drive into its connector on the system board.

Tuck the Mylar tab back into its slot in the hard disk drive bracket case.
7
Replace the four 4-mm P1 Phillips-head screws to secure the hard disk drive to the base enclosure.
8
Replace the service door.
9
Replace the battery.
