HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the PCI Card Guide/Front Fan Assembly

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the PCI card guide/front fan assembly for the HP Z420 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the PCI card guide/front fan assembly that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.
Summary of instructions
To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the PCI card guide/front fan assembly, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select PCI card guide/front fan assembly from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the PCIe cards blocking access to the connectors. Click here to view how to remove the PCIe card.
  3. Disconnect the front fan cable from the system board.
  4. Press the release tabs on the front of the chassis to disengage the PCI card guide.
  5. Rotate the PCI card guide back and lift it out of the chassis.

  1. Insert the tabs on the bottom of the PCI card guide into the slots on the front chassis wall.
  2. Rotate the PCI card guide up against the chassis and push until it snaps into place.
  3. Connect the front fan cable to the system board.
