HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Removable Hard Drive

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the removable hard drive for the HP Z420 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The end user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the removable hard drive that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.
Summary of instructions
To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the removable hard drive, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select Removable hard drive from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
Removable hard drive removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. If the drive carrier is locked, use the key to unlock it before proceeding.
  3. Push on the carrier handle to release it.
  4. Pull the handle and slide the carrier out of the removable hard drive enclosure.
  5. Remove the four Philips-head screws that secure the hard drive to the bottom of the drive carrier.
  6. Turn the drive carrier over.
  7. Remove the two Philips-head screws that secure the cover to the drive carrier on both sides.
  8. Lift the cover off of the drive carrier.
  9. Pull the drive from the connector on the back of the drive carrier and remove the drive.
Removable hard drive replacement
  1. Place the hard drive into the drive carrier.
  2. Push the drive into the connector on the back of the drive carrier until it is seated.
  3. Align the tab on the cover with the slot in the back of the drive carrier and replace the cover.
  4. Replace the two Philips-head screws that secure the cover to the drive carrier on both sides.
  5. Turn the drive carrier over.
  6. Replace the four Philips-head screws that secure the hard drive to the bottom of the drive carrier.
  7. Slide the drive carrier into the removable hard drive enclosure.
  8. Push the drive carrier handle until it locks into place.
