HP Scanjet 5000/7000 Sheet-feed Scanner - Smart Document Scan Software Freezes While Scanning Documents


Occasionally, when scanning documents in HP Smart Document Scan Software (SDSS) 2.x, the application may freeze or lock up and it may be necessary to restart the PC and Scanner before scanning can be resumed successfully.
This error condition can be the result of the memory buffer filling up when scanning complex, high-resolution color documents.


This issue may be resolved by increasing the JPEG compression level within the SDSS software. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Launch HP Smart Document Scan Software.
  2. Highlight the scan profile which needs to be used, click Edit Profile.
  3. Click on the Scan tab.
  4. Click on the Advanced Settings button.
  5. Click on the More tab.
  6. Adjust the Scanner JPEG Compression slider to about halfway between Low and High (as seen in Image 1).
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Save.
  9. Resume Scanning.
