HP Notebook PCs - Error "Consider Replacing Your Battery" Appears in Windows 7

This document pertains to notebook PCs with Windows 7.

When using a computer running Windows 7, a window may appear indicating that you should consider replacing the battery. A red X may appear on the battery icon in the system tray. The notebook computer may also automatically shut down if Windows 7 determines that the battery has low charge remaining.

This behavior has been observed on notebook computers that are either upgraded to Windows 7 or came with Windows 7 preinstalled.

Windows 7 communicates with the BIOS software on the computer to determine the amount of charge capacity remaining in the battery. The message window will appear when the operating system detects that the battery is performing at 40% of its designed capacity.

If the Windows 7 battery alert appears on your computer, follow the steps below to test the battery.

Test the battery

To prepare your computer for checking the battery status, turn off the computer and connect it to the AC adapter. The notebook computer must be on AC power in order for HP Battery Check to function properly. Allow the computer battery to charge for approximately 30 - 60 minutes before trying to run the HP Battery Check utility.

If you plug in your AC adapter and immediately run the HP Battery Check, you may get a false failure showing the battery is bad. If the battery is in a low charge state (at less than 3%) you may also get a false reading.

Follow the steps below to check the battery using HP Support Assistant. If you do not have HP Support Assistant, download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the HP Support Assistant home site (in English).

Click Start and select HP Support Assistant.
On the HP Support Assistant window, select Information in the Troubleshoot box.
On the Troubleshoot your computer window, select Power, Thermal and Mechanical.
Click Battery Check.

The Battery Check tool will open, examine your battery and display the results of your battery status check.

The HP Battery Check will indicate if the battery needs to be replaced. If the battery does not pass the test, follow the instructions in the HP Battery Check tool for further assistance.

If HP Battery Check indicates that your battery is healthy but the Windows 7 battery alert message continues to appear on your computer, following the steps below may prevent the Windows 7 battery alert from appearing when your battery is healthy.

Update the BIOS software on the computer

To download and flash the BIOS, perform the following steps.

Go to the Driver and Download page for your HP product to download and install the latest BIOS or ROMPaq.
Before downloading the ROMPaq or BIOS update, print the installation instructions page in your browser.
Click the Download button on the page to begin downloading the update. Save the file to a convenient folder on the computer.
Close all other programs, and read the installation instructions before installing the ROMPaq or BIOS update. Not all ROMPaqs are installed the same way.

After updating the BIOS software for your computer, install the latest critical updates from Microsoft.

Install the latest updates from Microsoft

Run Windows Update to install the latest updates for Windows 7 from Microsoft.

Click Start, type Windows Update in the Search field, and then select Windows Update from the list.
In the Windows Update page, click Check for updates in the left pane.
If updates are available and displayed on the window, click Install updates and follow any prompts. Some updates may take time to install or require the computer to be restarted.
