Replacing the Printhead for the HP Photosmart Premium Touchsmart Web All-in-One Printer

Introduction
This document contains instructions on replacing the product printhead assembly. The printhead assembly is the part that holds the cartridges. Replace the printhead assembly only when instructed by an HP support agent.
These steps apply to all countries/regions except the United States.
If HP replaces your printhead assembly under warranty, you receive a new printhead assembly, cleaning materials, and a full set of new cartridges with the replacement printhead.
If your printhead assembly is no longer under warranty, you can purchase a new one online.
  1. Go to the HP How to Buy website, and then click your country-language.
  2. A Buy HP page displays. Look for the HP Parts store on this page. The location of the HP Parts store varies depending on your region. Click HP Parts store.
  3. Under Find your part(s), type CN642A in the Search by part number text box. Follow the on-screen instructions to order the printhead assembly.
Replace the printhead assembly
Follow these steps to replace the printhead assembly.
  note:
Follow these steps only when you have a new printhead assembly available to complete the process. Do not leave the cartridges outside the product longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to the product and to the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
  1. Press the Power button () to turn the product on.
  2. Open the cartridge door. Lift the door until it locks into place, and then wait until the carriage stops moving.

  3. Press the tab on each cartridge to release it, and then remove it from the slot.

  4. Repeat step three for each cartridge.
Step two: Remove the printhead from the carriage
  1. Lift the latch handle on the carriage until it stops.

  2. Lift the printhead straight up to remove it from the carriage.

Step three: Clean the electrical contacts inside the carriage
The new printhead assembly comes with moistened wipes labeled with a yellow sticker for cleaning the electrical contacts in the carriage. Thoroughly cleaning the contacts is important to successful replacement of the printhead assembly. Follow these steps.
  1. Remove a moistened wipe from its package.

  2. Wipe the electrical contacts in one direction from top to bottom. As the wipe becomes dirty, discard it, and then use a new one.
      caution:
    Do not wipe up and down or side to side. Doing so can damage the product. Wipe only from top to bottom.

Step four: Install the new printhead
  1. Remove the new printhead from its package.

      caution:
    Do not touch the copper colored contacts. Do not scratch the contacts.

      note:
    The new printhead assembly might include a postage paid mailing label and instructions for returning the old parts to HP for analysis. If so, save the printhead package for this purpose.
  2. Hold the printhead upright.

  3. Lower the printhead into the carriage.

  4. Carefully lower the latch handle.
      caution:
    Lower the latch handle before installing the cartridges. Leaving the handle up while installing the cartridges can damage the printhead and the cartridges.

Step five: Install new cartridges
  caution:
Use only new cartridges. Reused cartridges might damage the new printhead.
  1. Remove a new cartridge from its package. Pull the orange tab straight back, and then remove the plastic wrap.

  2. Turn the cartridge over, and then twist the orange cap to snap it off.
      note:
    You might have to forcefully twist the orange cap to remove it.

      note:
    If the new printhead assembly included a mailing label and instructions to send the old parts to HP, save the orange caps for this purpose.
  3. Slide the cartridge into the slot that has the matching icon, and then push the cartridge in until it clicks into place.

      caution:
    Do not lift the latch handle on the carriage while inserting the cartridges. The latch handle must remain down to correctly install the cartridges.
    Find the correct slot by matching the color and shape of the icon on the cartridge with the icon on the printhead slot.
  4. Repeat the previous steps for each remaining cartridge.
  5. Close the cartridge door.

  6. Look for error messages on the control panel. If the control panel displays instructions, follow them, and then continue with the next step.
Step six: Load paper
The product automatically prints an alignment page when it detects a new printhead assembly. The alignment page prints on letter or A4 plain paper. Follow these steps to load the paper for the alignment page.
  1. Open the input tray.

  2. Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.

  3. Insert a stack of plain paper into the tray with the short edge forward and the print side down. Slide the paper forward until it stops.
      note:
    Do not overload the tray. Make sure that the stack of paper fits within the tray no higher than the top of the paper width guide.

  4. Slide the paper width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper.

  5. Close the tray.

    The product automatically prints an alignment page, aligns the printhead, and calibrates the print mechanism.
Step seven: Return failed parts to HP
If the new printhead assembly kit included a postage paid mailing label and instructions to return the old parts to HP, follow these instructions to place the old parts into the packaging and place them in the mail. HP wishes to analyze the parts to improve its products.
  1. Place the old printhead into the package that contained the new printhead.

  2. Peel off the lid sticker labeled B, and then use it to seal the package.

  3. Use the orange caps that you removed from the new cartridges to cap the old cartridges.

  4. Place the old parts and the form that came with the new parts into the box that contained the new parts. If possible, include a sample printout that demonstrates the issue with the old printhead.

  5. Close the box, apply the postage paid mailing label, and then mail the box to HP.
