HP 35s Calculator - Specifying the Number of Decimal Places the Calculator Displays

All numbers are stored with 12-digit precision, however, the number of digits the calculator displays may be modified in the 'Display' menu. To open the 'Display' menu, press . The first four options, 'FIX', 'SCI', 'ENG', and 'ALL' permit the modification of how numbers are displayed on screen.
  • Fixed–Decimal format 'FIX' displays a number with up to 11 decimal places (11 digits to the right of the '.' or ',' radix mark).
  • Scientific format 'SCI' displays a number in scientific notation (one digit before the '.' or ',' radix mark) with up to 11 decimal places and up to three digits in the exponent.
  • Engineering format 'ENG' displays a number in a manner similar to scientific notation, except that the exponent is a multiple of three (there can be up to three digits before the '.' or ',' radix mark).
  • All format 'ALL' displays all digits to full precision with a maximum of 12.
During some complicated internal calculations, the calculator uses an internal 15–digit precision for intermediate results. The displayed number is rounded according to the display format. If a number or expression has more than 12 digits, the calculator displays numbers in scientific notation.
To specify the number format for the display:
  1. Press .
  2. Choose 'FIX', 'SCI', 'ENG', and 'ALL' by highlighting the selection with the directional arrow keys, or by keying in the number to the left of the desired option.
  3. Press .
After selecting the desired format, key in the desired number of decimal places that should be displayed to the right of the decimal point. For example, press to choose four decimal places in the 'FIX' format, '0.0000'.
Display format may be modified any time during an operation. Once the format has been selected by pressing , the calculator automatically returns to the current work.
