Solution

Follow these steps to resolve the issue.

Step one: Run the automatic utility to clean the print cartridges

Use the following steps to clean the print cartridges. Make sure paper is loaded correctly in the product before beginning the procedure.
  1. Open HP Solution Center.
    • Windows XP: On the Windows taskbar, click Start, click All Programs, point to HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
    • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, and then click HP Solution Center.
  2. Click Settings, and then click Printer Toolbox.
  3. Click the Device Services tab, and then click Clean the Print Cartridges.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the task.

Step two: Clean the electrical contacts

Use the following steps to clean the electrical contacts on the print cartridges.
  1. Press the power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the print cartridge door. The print carriage moves to the far right side of the product.

  3. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  4. Lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it.
    • Remove the print cartridge from the slot on the left to replace the tri-color print cartridge.
    • Remove the print cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black print cartridge.
  5. Pull the print cartridge toward you out of its slot.
    note:
Do not remove both print cartridges at the same time. Do not leave a print cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.
  6. Dip a clean foam rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.
  7. Holding the print cartridge by its sides, use the swab or cloth to clear away any ink or debris buildup on the copper-colored contacts. Allow the print cartridge to dry for approximately ten minutes.

  8. Slide the print cartridge at a slight upward angle into the empty slot, and gently push it until it snaps into place.
    • To install the tri-color print cartridge, insert it into the left slot.
    • To install the black print cartridge, insert it into the right slot.

  9. Repeat as necessary for the other print cartridge.
  10. Close the print cartridge door, and then connect the power cord to the back of the product.

Step three: Let the product rest for 30 minutes

Ensure the printer is on, and then wait for at least 30 minutes before attempting to print. If the printed output is still streaked or has missing lines, continue to the next step.

Step four: Replace the print cartridge

If you have completed all of the troubleshooting and are still experiencing a problem, replace the problem print cartridge that was identified by the extended self-test report.
  1. Press the power button () to turn on the product.
      caution:
If the product is off when the print cartridge door is opened, the product will not release the cartridges.
  2. Open the print cartridge door. The print carriage moves to the far right side of the product. If the print carriage does not move to the right side, turn the product off, and then turn it on again.

    • Remove the print cartridge from the slot on the right to replace the black print cartridge.
  4. Pull the print cartridge toward you out of its slot.
    note:
If the print cartridge is being removed because it is low or out of ink, recycle it. The HP Inkjet Supplies Recycling Program is available in many regions, and is free of charge.
  5. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging, being careful to touch only the black plastic. Gently remove the plastic tape by pulling the pink pull tab.
