HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise - Device communication lost after configuring TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 in the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Issue: Device communication is lost between an HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, or HP PageWide Enterprise printer and the Embedded Web Server (EWS) after enabling the SSL/TLS Protocols TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 only options (by disabling SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 options) in the EWS.

Other symptoms include the following:

  • Lost communication with the web browser

  • Unable to connect with an HP LaserJet Enterprise or HP OfficeJet Enterprise printer using the EWS

  • Unable to access Web Jetadmin (WJA), Imaging and Printing Security Center, and/or Digital Sending Software

  • Unable to access other installed HP Software Solutions (HPAC, HPEC, etc.) and Partner Solutions

Solution

Restore connectivity with the device.

Cause

Devices now support the TLS 1.1/1.2 protocols for enhanced security. Enabling only the TLS 1.1/1.2 protocols and disabling SSL 3.0 / TLS 1.0 protocol may cause one or more of the symptoms listed above. This is due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Most web browsers do NOT support TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 or they are not enabled by default (see Figure 1).

  • Web Jetadmin, Imaging and Printing Security Center, and Digital Sending Software are not compatible with TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 until Spring 2014.

  • Installed HP Software Solutions (HPAC, HPEC, etc.) and Partner Solutions will not support TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 until 2014.
