HP ScanJet - "This computer does not have the necessary USB software support to allow completion of a USB installation." error message displays when installing a driver

Issue

When installing a driver for an HP ScanJet scanner, the following installation error message might display on a computer:
This computer does not have the necessary USB software support to allow completion of a USB installation. The installation cannot continue until this is resolved.

Solution

Depending on the installation method, follow the steps to install the software driver:

Installation from a in-box CD

Follow these steps when installing a software driver from the in-box CD to a computer:
  1. Create a new folder in your local drive.
    (For example, C:\HP ScanJet Software)
  2. Insert the in-box CD into the disc drive.
  3. Copy all the files from the in-box CD to the new folder created in the local drive.
  4. Locate the folder created in the local drive, and then select the Setup folder.
    (For example, C:\HP ScanJet Software\Setup)
    note:
    Make sure not to use the “setup.exe” file.
  5. Delete the “usbready.exe” file.
  6. Locate the folder created in the local drive, and then double-click the “setup.exe” file.
    (For example, C:\HP ScanJet Software\setup.exe)
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    The software driver will install without an error message.

Installation from the HP product support page

Follow these steps to install the driver:
  1. On the HP Software and Drive Downloads page, type the scanner’s model number, and then click Find my product.
  2. Select an operating system, select the correct driver, and then click Download.
  3. Click Run to download the installation file (For example, setup_full_G3110_20_0_002.exe).
    note:
    When an installation error message displays, make sure NOT to click the Cancel button.
    Make sure that your computer is set to view hidden files.
  4. In Windows Explorer, complete the following steps:
    1. Locate the correct extracted folder in the local drive.
      Folder path: C:\users\(account name)\AppData\Local\Temp\(extracted folder)
      note:
      To identify and select the latest extracted file, sort the files by date and time.
    2. Copy the latest extracted folder to another location, and then rename the folder name.
  5. In the installation error message window, click Cancel.
  6. Locate the new copied extracted folder and then complete the following steps:
    1. Select the Setup folder.
    2. Delete the “usbready.exe” file.

  7. Locate the new copied extracted folder, double-click the “setup.exe” file.
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
    The software driver will install without an error message.
