Removing and Replacing the Hard Drive in HP Pavilion 20-b000, TouchSmart 20-b000/20-f000, and Touch 20-b000/20-f000 All-in-One Series Desktop PCs

This document applies to HP Pavilion 20-b000 All-in-One Desktop PC Series computers.

Use the steps in this document to help replace a hard drive in your computer. If you want to add a hard drive with more capacity (upgrade), know that you can upgrade to any sized hard drive that meets the connection type in your computer. Most often this is serial ATA (SATA or eSATA). Also know that there are formatting limitations that may be encountered for drives larger than 2 TB. To access all the data on drives larger than 2 TB format the drive using GPT or create multiple partitions smaller than 2 TB.

Before you begin

You need a Phillips head screwdriver.
Remove all CDs and DVDs from the optical drive.
Turn off the computer, and disconnect all cables. Be sure to disconnect the network cable before disconnecting the power cord.
Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
Place the computer face-down on a soft flatsurface. HP recommends that you place the computer ona blanket, towel, or other soft cloth toprotect the touch screen surface fromscratches or other damage.
Do not remove a component from the protective packaging until you are ready to install it.

Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting.

caution:
This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing the hard drive

Use the following steps to remove the hard drive.

Step 1 Place the computer face down on a soft, flat surface and remove the rear cover. For instructions, see the HP support document, Removing and Replacing the Rear Cover.
Step 2 Loosen the captive Phillips screw for the hard drive.
Step 3 Grasp the hard drive handle and pull the hard drive out to the side...
...then up and out of the computer.
Step 4 If replacing the hard drive, detach the four screws...
..two on each side of the hard drive cage. note: These screws are different than the screws used for other system components.
Step 5 Slide the drive out of the cage.

Replacing the hard drive

Use the following steps to replace the hard drive:

Step 1 Before installing a hard drive in the cage, make sure there is conductive tape...
...applied over the rear two holes of the drive cage. Apply tape if the tape is missing.
Step 2 There should also be a rubber grommet in each side hole of the drive cage. Install a new grommet into any hole missing a grommet.
Step 3 To replace the hard drive in the cage, slide the drive into the cage...
... until the screw holes on the side of the drive and the cage align.
Step 4 Replace the four screws to secure the hard drive to the cage, two on each side.
Step 5 The hard drive cage has four tabs on the bottom...
...that fit into four slots inside the computer.
Step 6 To replace the hard drive cage into the computer, place the tabs on the cage near their slots...
...and then slide the cage in sideways until secure.
Step 7 Press the handle for the cage down into place.
Step 8 Check to ensure that the hard drive cage is correctly positioned, and that the arrow on the top of the hard drive cage aligns with the locked padlock stencil and arrow on the computer frame.
Step 9 Tighten the Phillips screw to secure the hard drive in the computer.
Step 10 Replace the rear cover. caution: MBR or NTFS partitions are limited to 2 TB (without using dynamic disks and volume sets). If you are installing a hard drive that is 2 TB or greater, HP recommends formatting the drive using GPT partitions.
