A 'Paper Jam' Error Displays on the HP Officejet 6000 and 6000 Wireless Printer Series

Issue

The message 'Paper jam' displays on the computer.
The following symptoms might also accompany this issue:
  • The product stops printing
  • The Power button () and Resume button () lights blink

Solution

Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Step one: Remove any loose paper

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.
  caution:
Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage theprint mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam

  caution:
Do not try to clear a paper jam from the front of the product, which can damage the print mechanism.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn the product off.
  2. Push the button on either side of the rear access panel or duplexer, and then pull the panel or duplexer away from the product.

  3. Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.
      caution:
    If the paper tears while removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.
  4. If the paper is not there, and you are using a duplexer, check for jammed paper in the duplexer.
    Press in the buttons on the latch on top of the duplexer with your thumb and forefinger, and then lower its cover.

  5. Carefully remove any jammed paper.
  6. Reattach the rear access panel or duplexer. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.
  7. Open the top cover.

  8. Move the carriage to one side of the product.
  9. If there is paper jammed in the product, gently remove the paper through the top of the product.
      warning:
    Do not reach into the device when it is on and the carriage is stuck. Always turn the product off before you remove any jam.
  10. Close the top cover.

  11. Press the Power button () to turn the product on.
  12. Try the print job again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step three: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage moves freely.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. Open the top cover. The carriage moves to the center of the product, so allow it to move to that position.

  3. Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
      caution:
    Avoid the risk of an electrical shock by disconnecting the power cord.
  4. Remove each cartridge.

      caution:
    Do not lift the gray latch next to the carriage. Doing so can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing problems. The latch must remain down to correctly install the cartridges.
  5. Reach inside the product, and then gently move the carriage to the far right of the product.
  6. Insert each cartridge into its slot with the matching icon, and then press until it clicks firmly into place.

  7. Close the top cover.

  8. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  9. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  10. Try the print job again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next step.

Step four: Perform a power reset

  1. Press the Power () button to turn on the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet, and then wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  6. Press the Power () button to turn on the product.
  7. Continue to the next step.

Step five: Print a Printer Status Report

  1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.
  2. On the product control panel, press and hold the Cancel button () for 3 seconds, and then release.
    The Printer Status Report prints.
  • If the Printer Status Report prints and the issue is resolved, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next step.
  • If the Printer Status Report does not print, see the next step.

Step six: Service the product

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
Go to Contact HP Customer Support to schedule a product repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, you will be directed to a local service center in your area.
To confirm your warranty status, go to HP Product Warranty Check. Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty products.
