HP LaserJet Printers - Mac OS: Upgrading Firmware over USB from a Macintosh

Issue:
How to upgrade firmware using the HP software requires a network connection to the printer. This document outlines steps to send firmware files to the printer via a USB connection in Mac OS v 10.x
Solution
Use the following instructions in the order listed.
  1. Connect the printer to the Macintosh using a USB cable. Make sure this printer is the default printer in the Printer Setup Utility.
    Figure : USB cable
  2. Access www.hp.com and download the firmware. The Figure below uses the HP Color LaserJet 3800 printer as an example.
    Figure : Firmware files
  3. Open the folder on the desktop, the file automatically is going to unzipped.
Figure : Stuffit application unzips files
  4. These two files are going to appear after unzipping.
    Figure : Unzipped files
  5. Launch the Terminal found under Applications / Utilities.
    Figure : Terminal application
  6. Type in the letters 'lp' and a <space>.
    Figure : Terminal window
  7. Then drag the '*.rfu' file onto the terminal window. This will complete the path to the firmware file.
Figure : Dragging rfu file onto terminal window
These steps are normally used to send print jobs from the terminal to the default printer. These steps also work for sending firmware files to the printer over USB.
