HP Notebook PCs - Cannot Remove or Uninstall Software

Description
In Windows, certain software applications may be difficult to uninstall, or they may not uninstall properly. This document provides different methods for removing or uninstalling applications from your notebook PC.
Resolution
Before removing the application or software perform the steps below:
  • Disconnect your notebook PC from the internet.
  • Disable any anti-virus software, such as Symantec or Norton Anti-virus.
  • Close any open windows or programs.
Next, perform one or more of the following methods to remove or uninstall software from your notebook PC.
Method 1: Use Add/Remove Programs
To use the Add/Remove Programs function to uninstall the application, follow the steps below.
Windows XP Start Menu
  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
  3. Select the program that you want to uninstall. Click the Change/Remove button or the Change button. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Windows 98/Me Start Menu
  1. Click Start, Settings, and then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
  3. Select the program that you want to uninstall. Click the Change/Remove button or the Change button. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Method 2: Use the manufacturer's program removal tool
Windows XP Start Menu
  1. Click Start, then All Programs.
  2. Select the program that you want to uninstall. Click the Uninstall icon, if it is available. If the icon is available, follow the on-screen instructions. If the uninstall icon is not available, proceed to step 3.
  3. Click Start, then My Computer.
  4. Double-click the Local Disk C: icon.
  5. Double-click the Program Files folder icon.
  6. Double-click the folder of the program that you want to uninstall.
  7. Locate and double-click the uninstall icon. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Windows 98/Me Start Menu
  1. If the My Computer icon is available on the desktop, double-click it or right click and select Open.
  2. Double-click the Local Disk C: icon.
  3. Double-click the Program Files folder icon.
  4. Double-click the folder of the program that you want to uninstall.
  5. Locate and double-click the uninstall icon. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Method 3: Start in Safe Mode and use Add/Remove Programs
  1. If the notebook is powered on, restart your notebook. If the notebook is powered off, turn it on.
  2. Repeatedly press the F8 key when the first screen appears.
  3. From the Windows Advanced Options menu, select Safe Mode and then press enter.
      note:
    When the Windows XP desktop appears, Safe Mode is displayed in the four corners of the screen.
Method 4: Contact the manufacturer of the software for instructions
The manufacturer of the software or application that you want to remove may have specific instructions for the removal of that software. Contact the vendor's support site on the web or contact the vendor's help desk for more information.
Method 5: System Restore
Changes made to a PC can be reversed using the Microsoft System Restore feature. If the software that you need to remove was recently installed and the changes that were made to your PC since that time are minimal, see HP Notebook PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore.
Method 6: Reinstall Windows using the recovery process
If the previous methods fail to remove the unwanted software or application, you can restore you PC to its original factory settings using the recovery process. See HP Notebook PCs - Repairing or Reinstalling The Operating System for more information.
