HP Smart Tank Printers - Replacement printer instructions (Europe, Middle East, Africa)

Before you send your HP Smart Tank 210, 520, 540, 580, 590, 5000, or 5100 printer to HP for replacement, prepare it for shipping and save important parts and accessories to use with the replacement printer.

Secure the ink tanks

Make sure the ink tank caps are secure, and then disengage the ink system. Place the printer in a well-padded box, and keep the printer level to prevent ink spills.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then unplug the power cord.

  2. Disconnect any other cable.

  3. Remove any paper from the input tray and output tray.

  4. Close the input tray.

  5. Close the output tray extender, if it is open.

  6. Open the front door and make sure the print carriage is all the way to the left. If not, manually move it to the left.

  7. Press the side of the printhead cover to release the cover.

  8. Make sure all ink tank caps are closed.

  9. Insert a piece of cardboard into the printhead access area, tape it in place, and then close the front door.

  10. Find a box that is large enough to hold the printer and packing material, such as the original box the printer came in.

  11. Pack the printer securely with the original foam or other packing material, place the printer in the box, and then tape the box closed.

  12. Keep the printer as level as possible.

    Do not tilt or turn the printer upside down.

Set aside the parts needed for the replacement printer

Save the following parts from your current printer that will be used with the replacement printer.

  • Ink bottles

    Ink bottles
  • Power cord

    Printer power cord
  • USB cable

    USB cable that shipped with the original printer
  • Printer manuals

    Printer manuals

Set up the replacement printer

Make sure your replacement printer works properly before returning your previous printer to HP.

  1. Unpack the replacement printer from the box, connect the power cable, set your preferences, and then load plain paper in the input tray.

  2. Go to 123.hp.com to install the recommended printer software or app to complete the setup and connect to your computer or mobile device.

  3. Test all printer functions to make sure the printer is working properly.

  4. Return your original printer to HP using the instructions that came with the replacement printer.
