Replace cartridges in HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4530, 4670, Envy 4510, 4520, and OfficeJet 4650 series printers

Replace ink cartridges that are low or out of ink with new, genuine HP ink cartridges. This document is for HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4535, 4536, 4538, 4675, 4676, 4678, HP ENVY 4511, 4512, 4513, 4516, 4520, 4521, 4522, 4523, 4524, 4525, 4526, 4527, 4528, HP OfficeJet 4650, 4652, 4654, 4655, 4656, 4657, 4658 All-in-One series printers.

This video shows how to change the ink cartridge on the printers listed above. The printer used in the video is the HP OfficeJet 4650.

Replacing a Cartridge on the HP OfficeJet 4650 Printer

This video will show you how to replace a cartridge on the HP OfficeJet 4650 printer. When a cartridge is low or out of ink, follow the simple steps in this video to replace it with a new HP cartridge.

Purchase a new ink cartridge

HP recommends genuine HP ink cartridges.

Purchase genuine replacement ink cartridges from local retail stores or from the HP Store.

If you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink, you receive HP Instant Ink cartridges. Some HP Instant Ink cartridges are larger than standard ink cartridges, but they fit in the carriage in the same way. For more information about Instant Ink, go to HP Instant Ink.

Install replacement ink cartridges

Replace one or both ink cartridges as indicated by the printer control panel.

Turn on the printer and make sure it is loaded with plain, white paper.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you proceed.
Lift the lid, and pull up on the ink cartridge to remove it from its slot.
Remove the new ink cartridge from its package, and then remove the plastic tape from the cartridge.

CAUTION:
Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Handling these parts can result in clogs or cartridge failure.
Slide the cartridge forward into the slot, then close the lid on the cartridge slot.
Repeat the previous steps to install the other ink cartridge, if needed.
Close the cartridge access door.
After you install new cartridges, the printer automatically prints an alignment page. The printer automatically extends the output tray extender before a print job. Do not push in the output tray extender until the alignment page finishes printing.

Note:
If an alignment page did not automatically print, swipe left on the printer display, touch Setup (), then Tools, and then Align Printer.
Lift the scanner lid and place the alignment page with the print side down on the scanner glass. Position it according to the engraved guides around the glass.
Close the scanner lid, then touch OK. The printer aligns the cartridges.
