HP LaserJet M207e-M212e, MFP M232e-M237e printers - Setup incomplete or printer stops printing

This document is for HP LaserJet M209dwe, MFP M234dwe, M234sdne, and M234sdwe printers.
After printer setup, the printer prints some pages and then stops, Information button flashes, and one of the following error messages displays in the Information report or on the HP Smart app.
  • Printer Setup Incomplete
    Finish printer setup to enable printing.
    If setup is not complete, you will be unable to print very soon.
  • Check Your Account
    A problem has occurred with your HP account and you will be unable to print soon unless the issue is resolved.
  • Printer Cannot Print
    A problem has occurred, and you will be unable to print until the issue is resolved.

Step 1: Visit 123.hp.com to download the HP Smart app and complete printer setup

If you have already set up your printer using the HP Smart app and still the printer stops printing, continue to step 2.

Step 2: Turn off the printer, turn it on, wait for 2 minutes, and then try to print

After your printer restarts, wait for few minutes to automatically refresh the status of the printer. The printer Ready status changes to in the HP Smart app.

Click the printer, the printer status message changes from Printer Setup Incomplete to Ready. Available to receive your files. You should be able to print now.

If you are still unable to print or the Printer Setup Incomplete message persists, continue to the following steps.

Step 3: Access HP Smart website and sign in to your HP Account

Access the HP Smart website and sign in to your account using HP Account credentials.
  1. On the top-right corner, click Sign In.
  2. Type your Username, and click Next.
  3. Type your Password, and click SIGN IN.
    • If you see the Dashboard with HP+ orange banner, skip to step 5.

Step 4: Remove the printer from your HP Account

Remove your printer from your account, and then sign out.
  1. In My Printers, click Remove Printer.
    Please Confirm dialogue box opens.

  2. Click Remove.
    If there is more than one printer registered to your account, click Change Settings and repeat the steps.
  3. Click Sign Out.

Step 5: Make sure your printer is connected to the internet

The Wi-Fi icon stays off or blinks when the printer is not connected to the internet. Make sure that your printer is connected to the internet.
  1. Press the Wi-Fi button to turn on Wi-Fi.
  2. Open HP Smart, and then click the Plus sign.
  3. If the printer is not discoverable, set the printer to Wireless Setup Mode.
    1. Press and hold the Information button for three seconds and release it.
      All control panel buttons light up.
    2. Press the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons at the same time.
  4. Wait for about a minute, open HP Smart from your device, and then click the Plus sign to add the printer again.
  5. After the printer is discovered, connect the printer to Wi-Fi.
    The Wi-Fi icon stays on when the printer is connected to the network.

Step 6: Reset your printer to factory default settings

Reset your printer to factory default settings.
  1. On the printer control panel, press the Information button .
    A Printer Information Report prints.
  2. Note the network IP Address from the Information Report.
  3. Open a web browser, and then type the IP address.
    The printer EWS (Embedded Web Server) page opens.
  4. Click System > Service.
    Continuing to your printer settings dialog box opens.
  5. Click OK.
    The webpage displays a Not secure message. Click Proceed anyway or Advanced to continue.
  6. Type admin as username. For the password, open the cartridge access door and use the PIN on the label inside the printer.
  7. In the Restore Defaults section, click Restore Defaults.
    The printer automatically restarts in a minute.

Step 7: Use the 'Forget this printer' option in the HP Smart app

Use the Forget this printer option in the HP Smart app.
  1. Close, and then open the HP Smart app.
  2. On the Home screen, click Forget this printer.
    • For Windows 10 or Mac, right-click the printer name.
    • For Android or iOS, long press the printer name.
