HP Printers - HP Printer Assistant Software Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

This document is for HP inkjet printers manufactured in 2010 and later and Windows computers.

HP Printer Assistant is printer management software that installs with your Windows HP print driver. With it, you can scan documents and photos, order supplies, check ink levels, and more. Refer to these frequently asked questions for more information about HP Printer Assistant.

Is Printer Assistant installed on my computer?

When you install the full feature printer software on your Windows computer, either from the printer CD or from the HP website, HP Printer Assistant installs automatically and should be available. Use one of the following methods to check for and open Printer Assistant.

Double-click the printer icon on the desktop to open Printer Assistant.

Search Windows for your printer model name, and then click your printer in the list of results to open Printer Assistant.
- If you cannot find Printer Assistant, download and install the full feature driver for your printer on your computer.

How do I download Printer Assistant?

Download and install the full feature software for your printer from the HP website.

note:
HP Printer Assistant is not available for Mac computers. The Mac print driver installs HP Utility, which has similar tools and features.

Turn on the printer.
If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.

The software results page for your printer displays with the default operating system selected.
If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
Under the Driver heading, click Download.
During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer.

What if Printer Assistant does not open or shows multiple printers after upgrading Windows?

After upgrading Windows to a newer version, HP Printer Assistant displays the Connect a new printer tool instead of the printer settings and tools view. In other cases, Printer Assistant displays the Select a Printer window with multiple names for your printer or does not open when the printer is connected through USB.

Read the following sections to resolve issues.

note:
After completing the Windows upgrade, make sure to restart your printer and computer at least once before attempting to print or scan.

Connect a new printer displays instead of HP Printer Assistant

After upgrading your computer to the most recent version of Windows, HP Printer Assistant software displays the Connect a new printer tool instead of the printer settings and tools view.

Set up the printer connection again to resolve the issue. In some cases, reinstalling the HP driver and software is required.

Step 1: Reconnect the printer

Try connecting the printer again to regain access to Printer Assistant tools.

Click Connect a new printer.

When prompted, select the connection type, and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer.

note:
If a red X displays and the connection fails, click Retry, and then continue to the next step.
Press the power button on the printer to turn it off.
Close all running programs on your computer, and then restart your computer.
Turn on the printer.
Open HP Printer Assistant.
- If you can open Printer Assistant, the issue is resolved.
- If you cannot open Printer Assistant or the red X displays and the connection still fails, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Uninstall any HP printer software

Uninstall the HP print driver and software before reinstalling the latest driver.

Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary.
In Windows, search for and open the Control Panel.
Click Programs and Features.
In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
Restart the computer.

Step 3: Reinstall the latest driver from the HP website

After uninstalling the software, download and install the latest version of the full feature software.

note:
As an alternative method to downloading the software, you can use the installation CD if it includes the Windows driver.

Turn on the printer.
If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer. The software installation prompts you to connect the cable if needed.
Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
If a Let's identify your product to get started page displays, click Printer, type your printer model number, and then click Submit.

If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
Under the Driver heading, click Download.
During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer.

Step 4: Restart the computer and the printer

Restart the computer and the printer after reinstalling the driver to finish setting up the software in Windows.

Turn off the printer.
Close all running programs on your computer, and then restart your computer.
Turn on the printer.
Open HP Printer Assistant.
- If you can open Printer Assistant, the issue is resolved.
- If you cannot open Printer Assistant, and the Connect a printer tool displays, connect the printer again, and then restart the printer and computer to complete the installation.

Select a Printer window displays instead of HP Printer Assistant

This issue is for computers and network-connected printers upgraded to the most recent version of Windows. After installing the full feature HP printer software, the Select a Printer window displays with two or more names for your printer when you open HP Printer Assistant software. Printing functionality might be different depending on which name you select.

Use the following workaround to remove all printer names from the Devices and Printers folder, and then set up the printer again.

Step 1: Remove the printers from your list of devices

Delete the printers from Windows before setting up your printer again.

Close HP Printer Assistant.
Search Windows for devices, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.
Right-click one of the icons for your printer, and then click Remove Device. Repeat this step for any other icons for your printer.

Step 2: Connect the printer in Printer Assistant

Reconnect the printer with the HP software.

Open HP Printer Assistant again.

The Printer Setup & Software window displays.
Click Connect a new printer, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the printer setup.

Step 3: Make sure the printer is set as default

Confirm your printer is set as the default printer in Devices and Printers.

Return to the Devices and Printers window, and then make sure your printer is set as the default printer.
If your printer icon does not include a green check mark, right-click the icon and set it as default.

Step 4: Restart the computer and the printer

Restart the computer and the printer after reinstalling the driver to finish setting up the software in Windows.

Turn off the printer.
Close all running programs on your computer, and then restart your computer.
Turn on the printer.
Open Printer Assistant.

note:
If necessary, repeat these steps if additional printer names display in Printer Assistant again.

HP Printer Assistant does not open with a USB-connected printer

After upgrading to the most recent version of Windows with a USB-connected printer, HP Printer Assistant software does not open or the Printer Setup & Software screen displays when you click the desktop shortcut.

To resolve the issue, reconnect the printer or reinstall the software.

Step 1: Reconnect the printer

If the Printer Setup & Software screen displays when you click the printer desktop icon, click Connect a new printer, and follow the on-screen instructions to set up the printer again.

If you can open HP Printer Assistant, the issue is resolved.
If you cannot open HP Printer Assistant, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Uninstall the HP printer software

Remove all HP printing software from the computer before reinstalling the latest driver.

Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary.
In Windows, search for and open the Control Panel.
Click Programs and Features.
In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
Restart the computer.

Is Printer Assistant available for Mac?

HP Printer Assistant is not available for macOS or OS X. The Mac full feature driver installs HP Utility, which has similar tools and features.
