'Substrate Width is Too Narrow' Error when Loading Full-width Media on the HP Latex 600, 820, and 850, HP Scitex LX800, and HP Designjet L65500 Printer Series

This document is for HP Latex 600 (HP Scitex LX600 Industrial Printer), 820 (HP Scitex LX820 Industrial Printer), and 850 (HP Scitex LX850 Industrial Printer), HP Scitex LX800, and HP Designjet L65500 printers.
When loading media that is 320 cm (126 inches) in width, the carriage moves across the media and returns, and then the error 'The substrate width is too narrow, minimum width is 61.44 cm' is displayed in the front panel.
This message is counterintuitive, the actual issue is the media is too wide. The maximum width acceptable for the printer is 320 cm (126 inches). The printer will not successfully measure media wider than the maximum width, even if it is only wider by 1 cm or 0.5 inch.
This document provides two techniques as possible solutions for this issue. If neither technique is successful in 'fooling' the printer that the media is narrower, then the media roll cannot be used for the print job.

Technique one: Use dark colored tape

  1. Using dark-colored tape (black or dark gray), mask off approximately 1 cm (0.5 inch) of the left and right media edge in the section of the media that is on the platen.
  2. Load the media on to the printer.
    • If the error does not display, continue with the print job.
    • If the error displays on the front panel, continue to the next the technique.

Technique two: Trim media

  1. Using scissors, trim approximately 1 cm (0.5 inch) of the left and right media edge in the section of the media that is on the platen.
  2. Load the media on to the printer.
    • If the error does not display, continue with the print job.
    • If the error displays on the front panel, the media roll cannot be used for the print job.
